Story idea for Blog: New Wikimedia API Platform
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Please provide the following information.

  • Provide a short summary of your proposed post for the Wikimedia Technical Blog:

We are launching a new API Platform for Wikimedia projects. This work will make it easier for internal and external developers to build apps using content and data from Wikimedia projects, and to help contributors around the world add to the projects.

"What was launched, migrated, updated"

  • What audience or audiences do you think your post is appropriate for:

Developers, product managers who are thinking about using Wikimedia content or data

  • Will you need assistance with writing your blog post?

We'll need editorial assistance

  • Does your post need to be published by a certain date?

We'd like to have the blog post go out at the same time as the API portal goes live; Nov 30 is the current target date.

  • Do you have any other questions or comments?

We'll need to coordinate to make sure the blog post goes out soon after the launch.

Once your request is received, a technical blog admin will review it and reach out to you through Phabricator.

@EvanProdromou Great! Let me know when you have your first draft prepared and send me a link to it, so I can help copyedit it.

Most people choose to work through Google Docs. Let me know if this works for you.

@eprodromou Touching base on this. If you want to have this posted by the 30th, I'll need a draft by early next week.

In the US we have the 26th and 27th off for Thanksgiving, so we'll want a couple of days lead time to make sure it is edited and formatted for publishing.

Otherwise, we'll have to look to publishing sometime during the first two weeks of December.

Hi Sarah! I'll be taking over as the contact for this blog post and responding to review feedback. The draft is ready for your review: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rpKFJY_lflzNC3Aatilh7OibDnpiXfsqQstErc3JAUk/edit?ts=5fd7b213

This is a low priority for now because there are a few technical issues with the API Portal that need to be resolved before we can publish the blog post. Unfortunately, I don't have a good idea of when those issues will be resolved, but I'll let you know when that changes.

Sounds good. I will take a look at it this week, and we can do another pass once it is closer to publication (in case anything changes with the portal between now and then)

apaskulin raised the priority of this task from Low to Medium.Jan 13 2021, 6:12 PM

Hi @srodlund, it looks like the remaining issue will be resolved on January 20. Is there a slot available to publish this post between January 21-28?

We can make this happen. I will work on the initial edit this week, and we can do the final editing when I am back from PTO on Jan 21.

apaskulin changed the task status from Open to Stalled.Jan 22 2021, 5:37 PM

Hi @srodlund, thanks for your edits! Unfortunately, this is blocked again, and we won't be able to post next week. I don't have a new target date, hopefully sometime in February, but I'll let you know when I know more. Setting this to Stalled for now

No problem! I'll be ready to post it when you are!

@apaskulin I took a last look over the draft this morning. It looks good! I think the only thing it is missing is a screenshot.

I'm going to move it over to the blog for formatting, so it will be ready to post once you give the go ahead!

Thanks! This is no longer blocked by technical issues, but I'm leaving this as stalled pending management review

apaskulin removed apaskulin as the assignee of this task.

Product management has decided to hold off on publishing this blog post in its current form. Thanks for all your help, @srodlund!
