Synopsis

  • I hope this project really elevates the platform to new standards of understanding by our users. We add few short clippings as short as 1min or less for a better visualisation and easy understanding. And we add short clips to make sure the audience understand and spend less time to actually learn something. And also it's a huge data saver.

I haven't contacted any mentors yet but will try to catch up with few of them.

Deliverables

I have planned to start this project by trying it as a prototype for a small web page and then add these codes to open sourceAnd I am yet to plan all the other stuff and surely I ll complete by the time of acceptance.

Participation

Since this is the first time for me IN GSOC I am not quite sure whom to ask for help and find help too.I'll figure out a way for it.

About Me

Tell us about a few:

  • I am currently doing my Bachelors at Indian Institute of Information Technology Sri City
  • I have seen a person on Linked In enrolled to GSOC last year and this was 3 months ago and from then I have been learning about GSOC and waiting for it's application openings.I have learned about wikimedia through GSOC Organisations list itself and this is my top priority Organisation I want to contribute for mainly because of the purpose which the company is serving:Free education availability to everyone
  • I have my college Semester Exams for a month ending on May 10th and a small 3 day vacation with friends after that.

Hi @shashidharbabu_p_v_d, thanks for taking the time to report this and welcome to Wikimedia Phabricator! Could you please provide some context? Which "platform" is this about exactly? Who is "we"? How is this related to Wikimedia and some Wikimedia software project? Please also see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/Participants - thanks.

Hello sir,
Thanks for reaching out.By platform I mean working on the front end of
wikipedia. When searching for a particular topics in Wikipedia, other than
the pictures available we lack the visual understanding of
explanations. So,I have this idea of introducing short video clips to
Wikipedia.I am also interested in working on a user friendly bot for
wikipedia for more accurate exploration of wikipedia. As I have a small
doubt regarding this project,Can we work on Wikipedia for this project? If
not can you please tell me any others like Wikimedia Zulip chat etc.I am
extremely sorry for my typo. It's "I" and not "We".Hoping to hear from you
soon!
Thanks
Shashidhar Babu.P.V.D.

Thanks for the quick reply. There is no front end of Wikipedia as one single software piece; there are many software components involved. You may want to check https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/New_Developers too and get a bit more acquaintained to Wikimedia tech projects. In my very personal understanding, creating videos is out of scope for Google Summer of Code (emphasis by me). It's unclear what the bot would do, please be way more specific, elaborate, and follow https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Google_Summer_of_Code/Participants - thanks! (PS: I'm not a sir. :)

Hey @shashidharbabu_p_v_d

Thanks for showing your interest to participate in Google Summer of Code with Wikimedia Foundation! Please make sure to upload a copy of your proposal on Google's program site as well in whatever format it's expected of you, include in it this public proposal of Phabricator before the deadline i.e April 13th. Good luck :)

GSoC application deadline has passed. If you have submitted a proposal on the GSoC program website, please visit https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/project/view/5104/ and then drag your own proposal from the "Backlog" to the "Proposals Submitted" column on the Phabricator workboard. You can continue making changes to this ticket on Phabricator and have discussions with mentors and community members about the project. But, remember that the decision will not be based on the work you did after but during and before the application period. Note: If you have not contacted your mentor(s) before the deadline and have not contributed a code patch before the application deadline, you are unfortunately not eligible. Thank you!

@shashidharbabu_p_v_d We are sorry to say that we could not allocate a slot for you this time. Please do not consider the rejection to be an assessment of your proposal. We received over 100 quality applications, and we could only accept 10 students. We were not able to give all applicants a slot that would have deserved one, and these were some very tough decisions to make. Please know that you are still a valued member of our community and we by no means want to exclude you. Many students who we did not accept in 2020 have become Wikimedia maintainers, contractors and even GSoC students and mentors this year!

Your ideas and contributions to our projects are still welcome! As a next step, you could consider finishing up any pending pull requests or inform us that someone has to take them over. Here is the recommended place for you to get started as a newcomer: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/New_Developers.

If you would still be eligible for GSoC next year, we look forward to your participation.
