Automatic citation in VE mess author and date
Open, Needs TriagePublicBUG REPORT

Description

List of steps to reproduce (step by step, including full links if applicable):

  • Go to visual editor in English Wikipedia
  • Add a citation
  • Select automatic
  • Paste url (examples bellow)
  • Insert
  • Check values in last and first authors name

What happens?:
It seems that there are some issue with the automatic citation utility in the visual editor. In some URLs the last/first fields get "contaminated" with the date field.

For example the url : https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2021/03/it-s-very-special-picture-why-vaccine-safety-experts-put-brakes-astrazeneca-s-covid-19 renders as :

Vogel, Gretchen; KupferschmidtMar. 17, Kai; 2021; Pm, 1:30 (2021-03-17). "'It's a very special picture.' Why vaccine safety experts put the brakes on AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine". Science | AAAS. Retrieved 2021-04-16.

And the url : https://www.musicradar.com/news/guitars/15-gretsch-electric-guitar-stars-240229, gives this :

<ref>{{Cite web|last=March 2010|first=The MusicRadar team 18|title=15 ...

This are two examples, I have found the issue also in others URLs. This is happening approximately since three days ago.

What should have happened instead?:

Obviously, the date must go to its corresponding field not to the author's name

Software version (if not a Wikimedia wiki), browser information, screenshots, other information, etc:

I've found the problem in some URLs, both in Chrome and Firefox Wikipedia web, running in a Android phone.

Event Timeline

Another example : https://www.guitarworld.com/features/down-and-dirty-g-love-g-love-corvette-aka-mean-greenie

Generates this citation (date mixed with author name) :

July 2011, G. Love 09. "Down and Dirty with G. Love: The G. Love Corvette aka The Mean Greenie". guitarworld. Retrieved 2021-04-17.

I can reproduce all these with Zotero 5.0.96; likely a different version than Wikimedia has deployed, but probably an upstream issue.
