Request for account creation limit and temporary IP unban on Apr 24, 2023
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

I run Edit-a-Thons for my library. (User page SDPLPauline)

As per this wiki section, it was recommended that I place a request for the following reasons:

  1. To remove any potential account creation limit temporarily
  2. To temporarily remove the IP Ban on our associated IP Addresses.

I believe the only IP that is currently blocked is the following:
137.164.0.0/16

For clarification, I believe the IP block was put in place not just because of some more mischievous patrons, but because we share a building with a high-school, though we are not a school library. Thus, I am only asking for a temporary unbanning. The details of this program are as follows:

Event time: Apr 24, 2023. From 6-8pm Pacific Time.

The IPs to allow: 137.164.0.0/16

The expected number of people to attend the event: 5-10

The list of wikis you wish to allow account creation on: Main Wikipedia.org website

User link: [[User:SDPLPauline]]

Program calendar link on library website, for additional verification.

Thanks

We can indeed do the first thing, remove any account creation limit.

Please note we don't manage the IP bans on our site configuration, you need to request it on:

Reedy updated the task description. (Show Details)

If you've got a /16 of IPv4 space... That would be 65,536 IP addresses... And if you're expecting only 5-10 people, and you've got access to multiple machines (and each machine has a different public IPv4 address), you really shouldn't need any account limit creation exemption...

Hi Reedy,

I'm not sure how our IT has the computers set up, but basically, every computer on that network has the "same IP". I'm simply copying the IP that throws up the error when attempting to make an account or edit without one. I believe our network is shared with a local community college in addition to the local highscool, which adds a layer of slight complexity.

As for the account creation limit, that is a recommendation given on the [[Wikipedia:How to run an edit-a-thon#Determine how to create user accounts]] page mentions that you should request an exemption if you expect more than 6 accounts being generated from the same IP/location in succession. Since we use such an odd IP block, and since they're all blocked, I'm simply requesting both at the same time.

My main priority is getting the library unbanned temporarily. If only 6 out of our 10 projected participants manage to make an account, we'll be disappointed but the program is still quite salvageable.

I’m aware what the guidelines say.

They also say

Request an exception to the limit for your IP address at least a week in advance.

24H, on a weekend is not a week in advance.

You don’t need an exemption on such a large amount of IP space, if most of the range isn’t going to be used. Especially as by your own admission that the range is shared with a School which has presumably been blocked repeatedly due to abuse by students…

If it is just one IP being used, the exemption should be on that.

As mentioned above, we don’t deal with IP blocks here done onwiki. So you need to request that on the English Wikipedia. Which is more of a blocker to your event than the account creation cap increase.
