I have added the sql_lab role to @AndrewTavis_WMDE 's account: andrewtavis-wmde so that should work now.
It's worth noting that we have a ticket open regarding the automatic assignment of these privileges: T328457: Grant all authenticated users access to SQL Lab in Superset
The current thinking (T328457#8730181) is to allow all authorized users to access SQL Lab, so it's just a matter of finding time to implement it. Apologies for the delay in this case.
