Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • Go to a talk page with existing discussions on it and DiscussionTools enabled.
  • Click reply and enter text:

What should have happened instead?:

The second line should have been displayed as block text.

Software version:

This happens currently on wikipedia. A user on my 3rd party wiki reported that this was fine on 1.39.3 but stopped working when we upgraded mediawiki and extensions to 1.39.4.

I think this is the correct behavior.

When replying, the wikitext you type will be added as list items (after : or *), and wikitext does not allow using leading spaces to create preformatted text inside list items.

When adding a new topic, the wikitext you type will be added directly, and in that case, leading spaces work to create preformatted text, and this is also displayed correctly in preview.
