Problem

The Tainted References feature still consumes styling variables derived from Wikimedia UI base (see code search for more details), a repository that now has been archived. The Tainted References UI will keep going out of sync with our design system's standards unless the deprecated variables are replaced by Codex tokens.

Expected outcome

The Tainted References UI is in aligned and in sync with the stylistic foundations of Wikimedia's design system because it only consumes styling variables derived from Codex tokens.

Acteptance criteria

• All WikimediaUI Base variables used in Tainted References are replaced by the equivalent Codex tokens

Notes

• Any discrete values used for styling that have a Codex token equivalent should also be replaced for traceability and consistency.
• The Wikibase team might consider migrating the Tainted References feature to Codex instead (although, at the time of writing, a Popover component is not available in our new design system library)
