If dark mode is turned on, some colors of map legends are changed in the Android app
Closed, ResolvedPublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • Turn on dark mode
  • In the Android app go to an article to see a map with a color legend
  • Some (not all) colors are changed

What happens?:
If dark mode is turned on, the colors of the legends of maps are changed (example map where the yellow color is replaced with brown).
When light mode is turned on and dark mode is turned on only in the Android Wikipedia app, then the colors are correct. They are still incorrect when adopt system color schema is turned of in the app's color scheme setting at the bottom.

What should have happened instead?:
The app should make sure colors of map legends are always the same, regardless of the mode.

Software version: 2.7.50 (this bug has existed for a long time now)

Other information (browser name/version, screenshots, etc.):
Android 11
T222476 could be related
I hope somebody can confirm this with more details about their device. I could provide a screenshot later.

Hey @Prototyperspective , would you mind turning on image dimming the settings of your app and then try this again?

@JTannerWMF Already tried that and tried it again now...it doesn't work even if both of the color scheme options are disabled. It also doesn't work if only dimming is disabled or when switching to another color scheme as long as the device's dark mode is enabled.

@Prototyperspective Here is what I see for the article you linked:

This seems correct. Can you be more specific about what you see? Can you share screenshots?

Here (but not much to see):

This is occurring for many maps. That's why I thought there was a bug report for this already. I hope at least somebody with the same problem shows up here at some point or that enough people simply test it. This is when the dark mode on the device is turned on,

Hey @Prototyperspective our engineer couldn't reproduce it so I am sending it to QA to see if they can (@ABorbaWMF )

I'm not sure I am seeing the exact same issue as the ticket description. I am seeing some differences on this article's map

Expanded infobox in dark and light modes. There are small notches below the color squares in dark mode. However, the colors seem to match.

It probably depends on the device model and since mine is a fairly common one I'd suggest that if people on many devices or many devices are used to test things, the map colors are tested as well. I don't know if there ever are tests on many devices from different vendors. The colors are showing fine in the Web browser. They are also showing fine when turning off device dark mode. Maybe somebody finds this issue and adds some more details or somebody finds the issue in the code or a similar problem in other apps along with the solution to this problem.

Looks good on 2.7.50543-r-2025-07-31

Tested on Pixel 6 on Android 15 and OnePlus 8 on Android 13. Tested on articles with maps.

I wonder why this is solved. Just FYI it does display the colors properly now even with dark mode enabled and I don't know since when. Maybe a device issue; it's strange. This issue lasted for quite a while when I had this.
