I am Harish Machha, currently second year at SIT’s College of Engineering, Ichalkaranji, affiliated with D-BATU University in Maharashtra, India, where I am pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electronics & Computer Engineering. My academic journey is deeply rooted in my passion for technical work, documentation, and the exploration of emerging technologies. Project Proposal

Title

Complete migration of MediaWiki documentation

Synopsis

This project involves migrating relevant MediaWiki documentation from the Meta-Wiki to MediaWiki.org, the official wiki for MediaWiki. Licensing restrictions prevent direct import, so we will manually migrate the pages. The migrated information will be well-organized, structured, and fully compatible with the existing MediaWiki documentation. MediaWiki software is a popular tool used by multiple other websites, companies, and organizations. It helps with collecting and organizing information to make it available to people. It helps Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects.

Project goals and deliverables

  1. Adding missing & update the contents info from equivalent Meta pages Meta-Wiki.
  2. Creating documentation that covers the equivalent content of MediaWiki.org .
  3. Reviewing and improving the discoverability and maintainability of WMF-specific documentation.

stated the above deliverables, here is my detailed approach to achieving them,

Approach

Updated MediaWiki.org Documentation:
• List of migrated topics or sections from Meta-Wiki to MediaWiki.org.
• Documentation of changes made to existing MediaWiki.org pages based on Meta-Wiki content.
• Clear references or links to the original Meta-Wiki pages (if applicable).
Enhance Completeness MediaWiki Documentation:
• List of new documentation pages created on MediaWiki.org. Identify missing information in existing MediaWiki.org pages compared to Meta-Wiki equivalents.
• Create comprehensive documentation that addresses user needs.
• Documented content migrated from relevant Meta-Wiki pages for each new page.
• evaluating to MediaWiki.org formatting and style guidelines.
Improved WMF-Specific Documentation System:
• Conduct user research to understand how users find and use WMF-specific documentation.
• User research report outlining findings and recommendations for improvement.
• Improve the information architecture and organization of WMF-specific pages.
• Documentation style guide or template for consistent formatting of WMF-specific pages.

Timeline and Budget

Phase 1 (May 20 - June 29): Adding Missing & Updating Content Information from Equivalent Meta-Wiki Pages

1. Collecting and Gathering Information (2 weeks)
• I will learn more about MediaWiki and analyze all the notes provided to get an overview of the documentation process.
• I will analyze and collect project details through my mentors.
• I will collect information about features that are useful for users.
• I will set up the project in a local environment.
2. Documentation Time (3 weeks)
• I will begin documenting and updating content for MediaWiki.
• This part includes updating information and removing duplicate documentation from MediaWiki based on the lists provided in the project details.
• I will evaluate whether the removal of duplicate documents is complete.
3. Review (1 week)
• I will submit the work for requested changes in the documents.
• I will commit the changes and get them reviewed.

  1. First Phase Evaluation (June 29)

• First phase evaluation period.

Phase 2 (June 30 - August 31): Creating Documentation that Covers the Equivalent Content of MediaWiki.org

1. Document Analysis and Content Coverage (2 weeks)
• I will research and gather information about each section of MediaWiki, obtaining all relevant notes so that contributors can get an overview of the documentation process.
• I will create content for the equivalent documents.
2. Documentation Time (3 weeks)
• I will document the content for MediaWiki.
• This will include updating and reconstructing the listed documentation to update its version for MediaWiki.
3. Review from Community (1 week)
• I will share my work with mentors for requested changes in the documents.
• I will commit the changes and get them reviewed.
4. Second Phase Evaluation (August 31)
• Second phase evaluation period.

Phase 3 (September 1 - October 5): Reviewing and Improving the Discoverability and Maintainability of WMF-Specific Documentation

1. Maintaining and Organizing Listed Documents (2 weeks)
• I will evaluate all documentation listed in this section to understand its usability, accessibility, and how it can be maintained to provide information that helps contributors get an overview of the documentation.
2. Documentation Time (2 weeks)
• I will begin working on organizing the information and structuring it.
• This includes implementing improvements in usability, accessibility, and design.
3. Review (1 week)
• I will submit the completed work based on requested changes.
• I will commit the changes and get them reviewed.

Phase 4 (October 6 - October 18): Project Completion and Review

• I will analyze whether all project scopes and requests have been achieved and conduct a review.
• This includes final cleanup tasks and final submission of the evaluation.

I am genuinely excited about the opportunity to contribute to the Wikimedia Foundation project through Google Season of Docs. With my experience, I am excited to collaborate with mentors and fellow contributors to ensure the successful implementation of this project. I am glad to be part of this initiative and to working diligently towards achieving our goals.
