This task seeks to track feedback and potential improvements for the Toolhub taxonomy: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Toolhub/Data_model#Taxonomy_v2.
Based on my personal attempts to use the taxonomy to add annotations to tools, and based on ad-hoc discussions with others, I've noticed the following areas for improvement:
Domain:
- Too much overlap between GLAM and Cultural heritage; these should probably just be combined.
Content types:
- The list is too long and thus hard to parse and use.
- It's unclear what content type to pick for a tool that processes or provides information about page revisions. Is that page metadata? If so, that is too obtuse of a way to refer to such an important and common type of data, for which many tools have been built.
Tasks:
- The list of tasks is too long and thus hard to parse and use.
- We are lacking any task that captures developer activities as the primary task. For example: I was attempting to annotate PatchDemo (https://toolhub.wikimedia.org/tools/patchdemo) and there was no task for anything like "MediaWiki development"
Anyone is welcome and encouraged to leave additional feedback on this topic. If you'd like to help identify areas for improvement, I highly recommend browing tools in Toolhub and then editing the records that don't yet have annotations from the taxonomy (instructions: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Toolhub#Editing_tool_info). You can leave feedback as a comment on this task, or on the Talk page at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Toolhub
