Consecutive section edit reversions in en:Wikiquote's live 1.6alpha
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Description:

NOTE: I don't know what platforms en:Wikiquote server(s) are running, but its application version data is: * MediaWiki: 1.6alpha (not available in current MediaZilla Version listbox) * PHP: 4.4.0 (apache) * MySQL: 4.0.22-log

I found a repeating problem at q:en:Wikiquote:Votes for deletion during a
long series of consecutive section edits. Every 4th section that I
edited caused a reversion of all edits to the three previous sections
that were edited. Specifically (all times in UTC, from 13 October):

 • 01:14: The WQ:VFD#Katherine Whitehorn section edit

reverted my 3 previous edits to 3 different sections, which should not be possible
because it was a section edit.

 • 01:21: The WQ:VFD#Hindi proverbs section edit

did exactly the same thing, reverting my 3 previous edits from 3 other sections
while adding the new text to the appropriate section.

 • 01:32: The WQ:VFD#Guide to layout section edit

supposedly reverted my 4 previous edits (again, to 3 sections) when I
edited this section.

 • 02:02: The second WQ:VFD#Zoom section edit, my final in a series of

section edits, did nothing surprising.

The one thing I found in common was that the 4th new-section edit in each
series reverted edits to the last 3 sections, however many individual edits
were made. When I stopped at 3 sections with the last set (even though there
were 4 actual edits), the problem was not triggered. It was also not triggered
during the next (4th) consecutive section edit by another user the following
day, nor was it triggered by further edits to date (07:58, 15 October
2005 (UTC)), which have not repeated the pattern of consecutive edits
of 4 sections.

NOTE: This problem sounds like "Bug 1601: Section editing may revert previous edits", which has been called a duplicate of "Bug 1150: previous edits can disappear if a user edits the same page twice", but two problems concern me:
 1. I made each of my edits consecutively in one browser window, so there should have been no conflict with myself, and no one else appears to have been editing the page at the same time.
 1. Bug 1150 is marked as a bug in 1.4beta3, but the live English Wikiquote is using 1.6alpha, which one would hope was based on a stable 1.5 that should have resolved such a serious bug. I had not noticed the problem while we were running 1.5. We commonly do consecutive section edits on this page, so we would have seen it if it was in 1.5.

Again, this is on a live WikiMedia Foundation project with a high Google
presence, so please investigate this at your earlier convenience. Thank you.

I haven't been able to reproduce this in isolation; I can do six consecutive section
edits with no difficulties.

Problem went away from me, too, a long time ago. Sorry about not figuring out a
way to close it myself earlier.
