Automated Translation of Wikipedia articles integrated in Mediawiki
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Author: neubau

Description:
The DFKI (Geman research lab for AI) has released a GPL licensed version of a
translation tool.

This tool is able at least to attempt translation from major (European) languages.

It would be quite nice if Mediawiki could support any kind of automated
translation in a more or less distant future. This is nothing for MediaWiki 1.5.

The actual main problems are the translation process itself and a proper
integration into the user interface. One could assume that encyclopedia articles
are not the worst to translate as they (at least should) aim to a clear,
non-ambiguous language.

I have recently tried the excellent online collaborative localization tools on
the Ubuntu web site, and I believe that this is the better approach. Anybody
cares to have a look at it?

Automated translation is poor all around. There are always third-party tools on the net
for those who wish to toy with such, however.
