Interwiki links in MediaZilla all point to English Wikipedia
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

the link [[de:MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning]] should take you to
http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning
but actually takes you to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/de:MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning

the same is true of links that start en: e.g.
[[en:MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning]]
takes you to
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/en:MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning
not
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MediaWiki:Copyrightwarning

This also happens with other projects eg. commons: wiktionary:

Sometimes when you acutally view the wrong urls the actualyl take you to the
right place, but not always.

This is normal behaviour because http://en.wikipedia.org/ is a "gateway". The
result / the displayed page WORKSFORME.

Indeed, I think this is intended behaviour - it eliminates the need to
synchronise the interwiki details wherever they're used whenever a new wiki is
set up; indeed, in this case, it eliminates the need for the custom "MediaZilla"
code to know anything about interwiki syntax at all, because it can just
substitute onto an en.wikipedia URL and let MediaWiki figure the rest out. I
believe it also underlies to some extent the complex logic of things like
[[w:Foo]], [[w:en:Foo]], [[w:fr:Foo]], etc.

If you can give some examples where it *doesn't* work, they may indicate a bug
in MediaWiki itself, or in its configuration.

[BTW, it's also nifty for using bookmark keywords - I have "wg" set as a keyword
for "http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%s" in Mozilla, and can type things like "wg
meta:multimedia" and get to the appropriate page, although the redirection can
sometimes be slow under heavy server load...]

If this is the case, please provide examples...?

Of course when I come to test it everything works hunky dory! Thinking on this
and reading the last paragraph of comment #2 I'm guessing that most/all of the
failures have been at times of very high server load on en and/or the target wiki.
