After the limit was raised as above, I tested the script again on my machine, and it ran for about an hour and 10 minutes, then there was a three-minute burst of the same errors cited above . Sorry, I neglected to invoke the -v option on my most recent run). It ran further for about 1/2 hour without incident.

Lisp.hippie closed T145018: runUpdate.sh is running slowly, with frequent NoHttpResponseExceptions as Resolved.
This seems to have resolved itself, and the update process caught up with real time about 10pm PDT, Sep 7 '16.

I would add that these symptoms occur on two different servers, running ubuntu and centos respectively.
