@Pginer-WMF I'm interested in the mobile site using the same widget as desktop as part of my analysis of T226125.
Right now on the Minerva version of the desktop skin (https://en.m.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Spain?useskin=minerva&useformat=desktop) - an icon for the messages is not shown and when I click the bell icon I see alerts. However one problem I'm curious how to solve is how to show messages.

Minerva renders 2 icons just like Vector.
I don't think we want to show both an alert and messages icon in the mobile screen as space as limited.

A new dialog that combines both messages and alerts.
I believe we used to do this in Vector. Maybe there is some code artifacts lying around to help that

Add a link/tab to the alerts dialog that provides access to messages
