Document logo creation guidelines in MediaWiki
Open, HighPublic0 Estimated Story Points

Description

Description

  • Provide instructions on MediaWiki for how to create appropriate wordmarks and taglines for the Vector skin, for community members and 3rd party users
  • Make sure to provide guidelines on non-Wikipedia projects

Suggested actions

  • For now I think it would be fine to document this in MediaWiki user namespace. We can work with quiddity to add the content to https://foundation.wikimedia.org/ at a later point.
  • Having a wordmark section on https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Logo#Designing_new_logos which contains all English wordmarks and notes for how to generate different language versions.
  • It would be useful to have equivalents of Word_mark_creation#Wikipedia_wordmark_creation_grid for other projects e.g. Wiktionary

I've added instructions on https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_site_requests#Change_the_logo_of_a_Wikimedia_wiki based on the lossy version of the logos I've just deployed to production. I recommend that you get the desktop improvement versions of the logos through the same bit grinder.

I guess that since the logo is separated out, that's just https://en.wikipedia.org/static/images/mobile/copyright/wikipedia.png for all Wikipedias, right?

Yes, I was going to say — we're using SVGs aside from the globe (and some other project icons). Is there anything we need to do with the SVGs?

Seems like this tool could help strip useless content (like comments) from SVGs if there's any: https://github.com/svg/svgo

I've just tried it on the French Wikipedia word mark SVG and it reduced it from 16.292kb down to 6.08kb

The tool has a lot of options, you'll need to double-check that it doesn't have defaults that are bad for our SVGs.

@cmadeo could we document what the design team has been doing to create these logos on https://foundation.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_official_marks/Word_mark_creation - I'm not sure who owns this page but it seems outdated.

@Jdlrobson I reviewed this again. The pages referenced above are Foundation-wide legal pages that use of our trademark generally, not the Vector22-specific landscape layout. Those pages are still technically right, even if they don't apply to vector. So If you want to document this, we should do it in a different space. If it's a matter of giving communities guidelines for updating their logos in Vector, it should probably be documented in the design system somewhere with all of the other design specs.

I'll raise it with @Volker_E and @bmartinezcalvo this morning.

Hey, Justin. Just for the sake of alignment, I wanted to document here too that the DST considers that the Codex platform wouldn't be the best place to document the logo creation guidelines for Vector 2022. This decision is aligned with our intention of keeping the design system as MediaWiki-agnostic as possible.
