[2017-12-15 10:13:51] <flixtey> Glad I made it
[2017-12-15 10:14:11] <d3r1ck> onix: So the community is about amalgamating developers around Africa to fulfill the Wikimedia mission from a technical point of view :)
[2017-12-15 10:14:12] <africanhope> Do you mean what we do locally to engage developpers or what we do in our daily work
[2017-12-15 10:14:13] <d3r1ck> Here is a link onix: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Africa_Wikimedia_Developers_Project
[2017-12-15 10:14:52] <d3r1ck> So from every single country in Africa, we intend getting developers to work on MediaWiki and it's related projects
[2017-12-15 10:15:01] <d3r1ck> onix: Did that help?
[2017-12-15 10:15:09] <d3r1ck> But you can read more from the link :)
[2017-12-15 10:15:16] <onix> d3r1ck: πŸ‘
[2017-12-15 10:15:22] <eugene233> africanhope: I guess you are directing that question to me ?
[2017-12-15 10:15:51] <d3r1ck> onix: yes, I addressed your question. Hope it helps? :)
[2017-12-15 10:16:28] <eugene233> africanhope: If so then I will say yes to all. A bit of what we do back in our communities and the projects we engage in while volunteering :)
[2017-12-15 10:17:20] <flixtey> I think we are all excited to be here and maybe doing this a little bit orderly will help
[2017-12-15 10:18:11] <flixtey> So we will do this in 4 rounds after each round I I'll notify the group and move on to the next
[2017-12-15 10:18:23] <eugene233> flixtey: πŸ‘
[2017-12-15 10:18:53] <flixtey> 1. Can all introduce themselves and tell us how each one of us contributes as a developer from our communities
[2017-12-15 10:18:59] <onix> d3r1ck: yes I known the info in the link. Thanks. But I was meaning what are the global infos about the community (plans, roadmap, events and particularly why today's meeting )

[2017-12-15 10:39:57] <africanhope> flixtey: Can you explain the agenda so as to know where we're going? The broad idead is to get to know each other but is there an agenda beyond that?
[2017-12-15 10:40:42] <bam92_> Good question, flixtey
[2017-12-15 10:40:53] <flixtey> In the email we sent we explained what we wanted to achieve in this meeting
[2017-12-15 10:41:06] <d3r1ck> I think flixtey already said this
[2017-12-15 10:41:09] <d3r1ck> flixtey | 1. Can all introduce themselves and tell us how each one of us contributes as a developer from our communities
[2017-12-15 10:41:23] <d3r1ck> Hope that helps :)
[2017-12-15 10:41:25] <flixtey> And these items are what I have put in form questions to avoid us missing on each item
[2017-12-15 10:41:44] <flixtey> I already posted question 2
[2017-12-15 10:41:59] <Zppix> <flixtey> 2. How has your journey being and what are your greatest setbacks
[2017-12-15 10:42:33] <bam92_> For me I have not yet contributed but want to do so.
[2017-12-15 10:42:35] <d3r1ck> My journey has been very rough in bring in more developers from my country to the Wikimedia movement
[2017-12-15 10:42:53] <d3r1ck> The greatest challenge is retention
[2017-12-15 10:43:03] <Zppix> Agreed
[2017-12-15 10:43:11] <eugene233> flixtey: So far the ride hasn't been a bad one. Knowing whom to always contact about what has been very essential. Also, Having experienced people around obviously boosts. The major set back is not at the level of the project :)
[2017-12-15 10:43:29] <d3r1ck> It's a really slow process but I'm trying my best to bring in as more people as possible. I believe with time, more people will get in.
[2017-12-15 10:43:40] <eugene233> d3r1ck: Very well agreed.
[2017-12-15 10:44:00] <flixtey> For me the greatest setbacks yet is to understand the needs of the community and discover issues that need our support
[2017-12-15 10:45:06] <bam92_> flixtey or d3rick can you respond to my need?
[2017-12-15 10:45:26] <Zppix> bam92_: could you repost it?
[2017-12-15 10:45:31] <flixtey> d3r1ck: can you please take note of people's issue
[2017-12-15 10:45:47] <d3r1ck> flixtey: I'm doing that with pleasure
[2017-12-15 10:45:54] <d3r1ck> We can follow here: https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/AWMD_IRC-Meeting-#1
[2017-12-15 10:45:56] <flixtey> Thanks bro

[2017-12-15 10:46:13] <bam92_> For me I have not yet contributed but want to do so. How to get started?
[2017-12-15 10:46:32] <Zppix> bam92_: there are many ways one can contribute the movement
[2017-12-15 10:46:33] <eugene233> flixtey: I think that we need to make others appreciate FOSS. That is one major thing.
[2017-12-15 10:46:49] <r054l13> My greatest challenge is in finding women interested in volunteering in WM from my country.
[2017-12-15 10:47:24] <eugene233> <r054l13> : True
[2017-12-15 10:48:02] <Zppix> r054l13: this is a sad occurrence globally aswell
[2017-12-15 10:48:04] <d3r1ck> bam92_: The best way to get started is via an activation energy. There are many ways, here are a few link:
[2017-12-15 10:48:32] <r054l13> Most of them find in it a distraction for school as they May not know or see the advantages they get from doing so.
[2017-12-15 10:48:36] <d3r1ck> bam92_: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/New_Developers
[2017-12-15 10:48:38] <bam92_> ok. give those links
[2017-12-15 10:49:07] <d3r1ck> bam92_: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_become_a_MediaWiki_hacker
[2017-12-15 10:49:21] <d3r1ck> and of course this: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_become_a_MediaWiki_hacker
[2017-12-15 10:50:08] <bam92_> Thanks. But a specific link for African need?
[2017-12-15 10:50:18] <d3r1ck> bam92_: The last one: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/How_to_become_a_MediaWiki_hacker
[2017-12-15 10:50:39] <d3r1ck> bam92_: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Africa_Wikimedia_Developers_Project
[2017-12-15 10:50:43] <d3r1ck> Sorry, didn't copy!
[2017-12-15 10:50:46] <d3r1ck> bam92_: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Africa_Wikimedia_Developers_Project
[2017-12-15 10:50:55] <d3r1ck> I'm also documenting issues so it's a little hard to coordinate
[2017-12-15 10:51:00] <d3r1ck> But that's how you can get started!
[2017-12-15 10:51:23] <Zppix> If you need help getting started feel free to ask for help with anything
[2017-12-15 10:52:08] <d3r1ck> bam92_: You can always get in touch with us here on IRC
[2017-12-15 10:52:34] <africanhope> bam92: I might add that the AWMD dashbord on Phabricator gives issues you can work on right away. They are not specific to 'African need' but serve as a good starting point.
[2017-12-15 10:53:00] <d3r1ck> africanhope: Exactly! +2 to that :)
[2017-12-15 10:53:14] <flixtey> My internet connection is fluctuating
[2017-12-15 10:53:36] <d3r1ck> flixtey: It's fine! ZppixBot is logging the conversation. I'll email us al the conversation
[2017-12-15 10:53:36] <ZppixBot> Hey, d3r1ck, I'm an AI which is too dumb to carry on a converstation perhaps, you meant to ping Zppix instead?
[2017-12-15 10:53:44] <d3r1ck> Zppix: Hope you will access the log :)
[2017-12-15 10:53:48] <Zppix> d3r1ck: yes
[2017-12-15 10:54:11] <flixtey> I think you will have to go through without me d3r1ck
[2017-12-15 10:54:12] <bam92_> Thx for all this. I'll be soon active dev.
[2017-12-15 10:54:31] <d3r1ck> bam92_: Great! You've the magical power :D
[2017-12-15 10:54:35] <d3r1ck> flixtey: Okay! No problem!
[2017-12-15 10:54:52] <d3r1ck> Can we move on to stage 2? Q&A?
[2017-12-15 10:55:01] <d3r1ck> sorry, stage 3
[2017-12-15 10:55:16] <Zppix> I have nothing left to add
[2017-12-15 10:55:20] <d3r1ck> We also want that by the end of the meeting, everyone is aware of the project and what to do
[2017-12-15 10:55:21] <bam92_> @africanhope pls give me the link on Phabricator
[2017-12-15 10:55:45] <africanhope> ok but before moving can I share my issues too?
[2017-12-15 10:55:59] <Zppix> Of course
[2017-12-15 10:56:11] <d3r1ck> africanhope: Yes please do
[2017-12-15 10:56:16] <africanhope> I spent the last 4 months battling with IP Ban
[2017-12-15 10:56:21] <d3r1ck> Don't ask to ask, just ask :D
[2017-12-15 10:56:33] <Zppix> africanhope: was that resolved?
[2017-12-15 10:56:39] <d3r1ck> andre__: Here is your domain!
[2017-12-15 10:56:39] <d3r1ck> IP ban on phab :)
[2017-12-15 10:56:49] <africanhope> To put that simply,
[2017-12-15 10:57:10] <africanhope> My ip range was within a range banned from accessing Phabricator
[2017-12-15 10:57:23] <r054l13> Oh! :(
[2017-12-15 10:57:33] <africanhope> No matter which provided I switched to I was unable to access phabricator
[2017-12-15 10:57:53] <africanhope> it was like I could access it once every week, by chance
[2017-12-15 10:58:24] <africanhope> I notified several folks in the community starting with our devoted Derick and also other wikimedians though IRC channels
[2017-12-15 10:58:46] <africanhope> I reported this issues in the latest survey of Wikimedian developers, you probably heard of it
[2017-12-15 10:58:55] <bam92_> by ur authorisation, I try to edit EtherPad to add africanhope issue
[2017-12-15 10:59:08] <africanhope> Hopefully,
[2017-12-15 10:59:11] <d3r1ck> bam92_: Please feel free to edit
[2017-12-15 10:59:21] <africanhope> Sure go ahead
[2017-12-15 10:59:29] <bam92_> Thx
[2017-12-15 10:59:39] <d3r1ck> bam92_: Also document what I miss please.
[2017-12-15 10:59:49] <Zppix> africanhope: if its not resolved ill see if i cant assist you with getting this fixed after this meeting
[2017-12-15 10:59:50] <d3r1ck> Everyone is free to document something on the etherpad
[2017-12-15 10:59:57] <africanhope> Hopefully, while discussing with SSethi_(WMF) : https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User_talk:SSethi_(WMF)
[2017-12-15 11:00:02] <d3r1ck> africanhope: Did you bookmark the link somewhere to share with us?
[2017-12-15 11:00:46] <africanhope> Which link the discussion with WMF staff regarding the IP ban?
[2017-12-15 11:01:13] <d3r1ck> No, the phab ticket for the request to uplift the IP ban for you
[2017-12-15 11:01:50] <africanhope> hmm ok let me add it to the etherpard once I find it so as we dont waste time
[2017-12-15 11:02:51] <d3r1ck> africanhope: Okay!
[2017-12-15 11:03:05] <d3r1ck> Any other issues? andre__, any heads up with the IP bad? Maybe this can be looked int?
[2017-12-15 11:03:08] <d3r1ck> *into
[2017-12-15 11:03:42] <africanhope> The issue has been adressed hopefully
[2017-12-15 11:04:06] <d3r1ck> africanhope: Okay! So you can access phab now without any issues?
[2017-12-15 11:04:17] <d3r1ck> Any other questions please?
[2017-12-15 11:04:24] <africanhope> Following the discussion with SSethi_(WMF) and AKlapper (WMF) measures were taken to reduce the range or lift the ban, I don't exactly know
[2017-12-15 11:04:32] <africanhope> Now I can access phab
[2017-12-15 11:04:37] <Zppix> Ok
[2017-12-15 11:04:41] <Zppix> Great :)
[2017-12-15 11:05:11] <africanhope> So this was an issue preventing me from even inviting other folks to join the adventure, since I could not get phab to work myself.
[2017-12-15 11:05:28] <africanhope> That's it.
[2017-12-15 11:06:06] <d3r1ck> africanhope: Great! Thanks for raising this issue
[2017-12-15 11:06:17] <d3r1ck> And great that the movement techies worked on getting it fixed
[2017-12-15 11:06:27] <d3r1ck> I'm glad and hope you get active in solving bugs again :)
[2017-12-15 11:06:47] <d3r1ck> The floor is still open to ask any questions that will help you get into the AWMD project full time and contribute
[2017-12-15 11:07:03] <d3r1ck> The good thing is, you get to see your patch go live and used by everyone using Wikipedia :)
[2017-12-15 11:07:10] <d3r1ck> It's a great adventure ;)
[2017-12-15 11:07:26] <r054l13> I would welcome sujestions on my issue please.
[2017-12-15 11:08:19] <d3r1ck> Getting women into tech is generally hard!
[2017-12-15 11:08:33] <r054l13> What can I do or what can we do to bring in more ladies?
[2017-12-15 11:08:34] <d3r1ck> But before I give my suggestions, can Zppix share with us maybe stuffs that worked for him?
[2017-12-15 11:09:04] <eugene233> r054l13: It will be a bright idea for you to start from just a few ( 2 or 3), do some great job and then from there i am sure you will have some more joining you...(Though it's not easy :D)
[2017-12-15 11:09:08] <Zppix> Try showing them what they could be doing
[2017-12-15 11:09:32] <eugene233> Zppix: Exactly!
[2017-12-15 11:10:00] <Zppix> I know in the past showing what can be done then showing them how to do it has helped me help eugene233 get to where he is now, working on patches with little help required
[2017-12-15 11:10:37] <d3r1ck> I agree that taking very few ladies can go a long way
[2017-12-15 11:10:46] <d3r1ck> It'll also help you the mentor manage them well
[2017-12-15 11:11:00] <d3r1ck> So r054l13, you can get 2 ladies and guide them from start into Tech and Wikimedia
[2017-12-15 11:11:10] <africanhope> If they come from a technical background, then highlighting how beneficial this experience could be would be a good motive: increasing their coding standards, being exposed to high quality code written by other experienced devs
[2017-12-15 11:11:12] <d3r1ck> Showing then what to do and how to do it and make them interested!
[2017-12-15 11:11:12] <Zppix> I know showing the ropes can be difficult, but if you can prove to them what they are doing makes a difference to many, I am sure they will come join.
[2017-12-15 11:11:39] <d3r1ck> When they are ripe, they can take 2 each and the number grow.
[2017-12-15 11:11:44] <Zppix> They dont need to know how to code either! Wikimedia could use some documentation writers as well!
[2017-12-15 11:12:14] <d3r1ck> Yes! There are many dimensions to contribute to Wikimedia
[2017-12-15 11:12:17] <d3r1ck> Let me fetch the link
[2017-12-15 11:12:27] <bam92_> This can also be for bringing new guys in wikimedia dev
[2017-12-15 11:12:49] <d3r1ck> bam92_: Yes!
[2017-12-15 11:13:10] <bam92_> as mentioned by africanhope: "increasing their coding standards, being exposed to high quality code written by other experienced devs"
[2017-12-15 11:13:26] <d3r1ck> r054l13: There is this great resource done by Srishti and others in the WMF to show the various technical area overview to contribute
[2017-12-15 11:13:28] <r054l13> Wow! thanks alot I think I got what to do now.
[2017-12-15 11:13:34] <d3r1ck> Here is it: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wikimedia_Technical_Areas_An_Overview.pdf

[2017-12-15 11:13:55] <d3r1ck> r054l13: Great!
[2017-12-15 11:14:07] <r054l13> Thanks!
[2017-12-15 11:14:39] <d3r1ck> Any other questions? Feel free
[2017-12-15 11:14:48] <d3r1ck> No matter how small the question is, speak up
[2017-12-15 11:14:52] <Zppix> If they are worried about how people will react to their gender, tell them not to be, I have never ever have seen a single time Wikimedians have ever cared if you are a female, male, or other. We care about your contributions, and your personality. Wikimedia has a diverse population of nationalities aswell so theres plenty of people to get along with
[2017-12-15 11:15:00] <d3r1ck> Generally, small questions yield great results :)
[2017-12-15 11:15:22] <onix> Zppix: πŸ‘
[2017-12-15 11:15:57] <d3r1ck> onix: To back Zppix's point, Wikimedians are very welcoming! I can attest to that
[2017-12-15 11:16:16] <d3r1ck> Even the software engineer that work for the Foundation are also very welcoming. You won't even know they are SE in WMF
[2017-12-15 11:16:28] <noela> r054l13: Can I join you in that?
[2017-12-15 11:16:42] <noela> And be of help.
[2017-12-15 11:16:55] <noela> since we are from same country :)
[2017-12-15 11:18:04] <d3r1ck> The good thing in Wikimedia is, in any field you pick to explore, you will always learn something that will impact you directly
[2017-12-15 11:18:15] <d3r1ck> And also something that will impact your community if you are willing to share!
[2017-12-15 11:18:22] <r054l13> noela: Yes You are very much welcome. As 2 is better than 1 :)
[2017-12-15 11:18:27] <d3r1ck> Some of us who have been there can attest to that
[2017-12-15 11:18:29] <Zppix> However, if for some reason you see behavior within Wikimedia that doesnt seem acceptable you can always read this policy page and it will walk you through the proper procedure to handle it! https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/CoC
[2017-12-15 11:19:05] <Zppix> This includes wikimedia events as well.
[2017-12-15 11:19:27] <bam92_> Ok
[2017-12-15 11:19:32] <r054l13> Ok! great
[2017-12-15 11:20:18] <d3r1ck> .info 10mins left :)
[2017-12-15 11:20:18] <ZppixBot> INFO: 10mins left :)
[2017-12-15 11:20:21] <d3r1ck> Ask your questions :)
[2017-12-15 11:20:38] <Zppix> Already? Wow.
[2017-12-15 11:20:50] <onix> Zppix: as I see there is enough documentations and resources for many points what is really a good thing. Good work is being done here guys
[2017-12-15 11:21:25] <Zppix> Thank you!
[2017-12-15 11:21:36] <eugene233> If we wish to start a project in order for us to engage all Volunteers from Africa would it be a good way to engage all of us?
[2017-12-15 11:22:10] <Zppix> What do you mean by project eugene233 ?
[2017-12-15 11:23:04] <eugene233> Oh anything related to an extension or another important service to address the need of other volunteers and contributors
[2017-12-15 11:23:10] <bam92_> Can we discuss this point? Any areas of interest we are missing
[2017-12-15 11:23:50] <d3r1ck> any more questions? :D
[2017-12-15 11:24:10] <Zppix> eugene233: If theres a need to do something I cant see why not
[2017-12-15 11:24:33] <eugene233> Well let's see how that will go. :)
[2017-12-15 11:25:04] <Zppix> bam92_: Do you feel as if we are missing areas of interest?
[2017-12-15 11:25:37] <d3r1ck> onix: Do you have something bothering you? Any question?
[2017-12-15 11:25:42] <bam92_> Not at all, just because it was mentioned on the agenda
[2017-12-15 11:26:06] <Zppix> bam92_: I dont think well be able to cover the whole agenda this time. Sadly

[2017-12-15 11:26:39] <bam92_> can d3rick give a speech?
[2017-12-15 11:26:50] <bam92_> or someone else to conclude
[2017-12-15 11:26:58] <d3r1ck> :D
[2017-12-15 11:27:05] <d3r1ck> Okay! It was good having us all here
[2017-12-15 11:27:07] <onix> d3r1ck: not at all. Just glad to join the community
[2017-12-15 11:27:13] <r054l13> Or a prayer. lol
[2017-12-15 11:27:24] <d3r1ck> My great advice is that in volunteering, stay consistent
[2017-12-15 11:27:33] <d3r1ck> You will get results (very good ones as a matter of fact)
[2017-12-15 11:27:41] <d3r1ck> But don't be a volunteer prostitude :D
[2017-12-15 11:27:47] <Zppix> Well thank you all for coming to the meeting I look forward to helping you all out! As always I am always able to be reached by email or IRC
[2017-12-15 11:28:03] <d3r1ck> Pick one area and dwell in it. Stick around and always ask questions on IRC when you are stuck
[2017-12-15 11:28:08] <d3r1ck> My secret so far!
[2017-12-15 11:28:27] <Zppix> If you need help finding something to do just let us know!
[2017-12-15 11:28:28] <d3r1ck> Don't be shy to learn, stay focused and consistent in what you choose to learn and grow in
[2017-12-15 11:28:34] <d3r1ck> Zppix: Sure!
[2017-12-15 11:28:38] <d3r1ck> We are always around
[2017-12-15 11:28:49] <d3r1ck> I mean ZppixBot can always be of help :D
[2017-12-15 11:28:49] <ZppixBot> Hey, d3r1ck, I'm an AI which is too dumb to carry on a converstation perhaps, you meant to ping Zppix instead?
[2017-12-15 11:28:54] <bam92_> Thx for all of u.

[2017-12-15 11:29:41] <d3r1ck> I wish to suggest we can do this every month?
[2017-12-15 11:29:52] <d3r1ck> So we get help from each other and track our growth from time to time?
[2017-12-15 11:30:03] <d3r1ck> Maybe 2nd Friday of every month? What do we think?
[2017-12-15 11:30:05] <bam92_> Yes of course
[2017-12-15 11:30:09] <eugene233> d3r1ck: I was just about asking a question on that.
