re-create install2001 as a VM
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

so...

install1001 is a VM

install2001 is a physical server

install2001 has a separate mount point for /srv with lots of space (500 GB), install1001 does not have any of that.

But install1001 needs more space or it can't hold the /srv for apt.wikimedia.org (which is currently on carbon which we want to get rid of).

For now i have rsynced APT data only to install2001, which could become the new apt.wm.org technically.

But install1001 should likely be identical to install2001 and not a VM, so i am asking does anyone know why we ended up with this inconsistency, and do you agree we should then recreate install1001 as a physical machine? Create hardware request?

Also, should it still be called install1001, or should we better go with install1002 to avoid issues with renaming. This might actually be easier, since then we could also use the current install1001 to install the new server.

The result should be that install1001/2001 are using the same partman recipes too.

...or we could leave it a VM but add a second virtual disk (easy?) to just give it enough space and leave the rest as is. that would also work.

Why not go the other way and make both VMs? There's little point in having those be physical servers I think, they're really tiny machines.

Also, yes, give it another disk or just extend its / disk to be larger. All of carbon's /srv is 31G, which is... peanuts :)

Alright. will do that.

Heh, yes, but only since: " 00:48 mutante: carbon - moved the 1.5TB /srv/"mirrors.off", which used to be mirrors but is now on sodium, into / to that /srv/ can be synced without this"
