Probably the easiest way to do this would be to migrate to the core ResourceLoaderImageModule with variants, as this would also remove some of the excess functionality from Echo itself and provide more consistency with other extensions, and thus a greater likelihood of maintained compatibility and support down the road. So even if you really don't care about older browsers, you should do this anyway.
