VE occasionally opens a link within a template instead of the template's settings when clicked

Description

Described here,
means that sometimes the mouse will intercept the wikilink in a template. (I can't reproduce though.) Here's a video.

I tried editing an article whilst hovering over a link, and whilst VisualEditor was loading, the cursor changed to a finger which suggested if I'd clicked at exactly the right moment then it would've navigated to the link. It was a split second though. Is this only occurring on very slow machines?

Based on the video , it looks like the blue box was't fully covering the link. Hypothesis: If rendering of the blue box is delayed or the location is offset, the underlying link is exposed and clickable?

On a related note, some deliberate variant of this bug would be desirable. For example I often want to open a series of refs (or all refs!) in new tabs by right clicking through the reflist. This is a common workflow using the wikitext editor preview, but it's a serious pain in the butt when VE's blue box prevents it.
