I've submitted to Wikimania 2018 program committee this workshop, dedicated to experienced users who don't use the visual editor (or use it a few) on our texte-content wikis, in order to discover all the aspects of it. This workshop has already been done during the Wikiconvention Francophone 2016 and WIkimania 2017 in Montréal, both times in French (slides). That session will be in English.
Abstract is:
The visual editor is used by newcomers to make their first edits and edit beyond. Experienced users use wikitext. When both interact, they often don't understand each other, maintaining a gap on how to contribute.
Let discover the visual editor! Beyond possible bias from the past, the visual editor tool is now a very powerful editor, that has a lot of features that remain unknown to a lot of experienced editors. We will go through examples of basic contributions, then move to advanced uses. The goal is to help attendees to know the visual editor more and use it more often.
That session is ideal if you assist newcomers online, host IRL workshops, curate documentation, etc., to get more information about the visual editor, increase access, participation and quality on your wiki. Some examples of the visual editor’s integration to processes or documentation will also be presented.
Desired session outcome:
- All attendees are supposed to learn at least one think they don't know about the visual editor.
- Most of them would aim to use the visual editor more often.
