Use Creative Commons wording for MediaWiki:Wm-license-cc-conditions-attribution-text
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

Following a discussion on the Commons Village pump, I think the contents of MediaWiki:Wm-license-cc-conditions-attribution-text should be updated to more accurately reflect the requirements of Creative Commons licences. Lacking any good reason to do otherwise, I'd suggest using Creative Commons' own wording (seems to be the same on all Commons deeds):

You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.

This would supersede T75387, which just asked for addition of the requirement to link to the licence.

Creative Commons states that their license deeds are in the public domain, so there should be no problem with stealing their wording.

Event Timeline

Current text, from https://translatewiki.net/wiki/MediaWiki:Wm-license-cc-conditions-attribution-text/en :

You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work).

Current wording at rEWME:

"wm-license-cc-conditions-attribution-text": "You must attribute the work in the manner specified by the author or licensor (but not in any way that suggests that they endorse you or your use of the work).",

Current wording at Creative Commons (for CC v. 4.0):

You must give appropriate credit, provide a link to the license, and indicate if changes were made. You may do so in any reasonable manner, but not in any way that suggests the licensor endorses you or your use.

I think we should go with CC wording. Patch comming shortly.

It's fine to broaden the advice of this piece of interface, but the original text is not wrong, it just doesn't address the requirements beyond the attribution to the author. That "manner specified by the author or licensor" is a reference to 3(a)(1)(A)(i) of the 4.0 license.

Earlier CC BY licences don't allow the author to specify the manner of attribution, though, and Commons uses this message for all CC licence versions. Is the message intended to be specific to 4.0?

It's common for all CC BY licenses. From what I can see from https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/1.0/ to https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ all versions do include the same summary in the Attribution section, which is the language we've used here; as you proposed.
