Single user login (SUL) only works with Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons (and then only in a one-way direction)
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Status quo
Hello,

I usually log in to Wikimedia projects in Wikipedia. For example: I go to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page and click on the "Log in" link in the top right corner. I enter my login data and am now successfully logged in to the English Wikipedia.

When I open another Wikipedia version such as the German Wikipedia at https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Hauptseite or the Spanish Wikipedia at https://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Portada I'm also logged in to my account. This works well.

When I go to Wikimedia Commons at https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Main_Page at first it shows that I'm not logged in, but after a few seconds it recognizes that I have already logged in to Wikipedia. Then a small box in the upper right corner appears with the text "Central login You are centrally logged in as [myUserName]. Reload the page to apply your user settings.". This works well too.

Issues

  1. After having successfully logged in to Wikipedia I open another Wikimedia project (not Commons) such as Wikidata, Wiktionary, Wikiquote, Wikivoyage, Mediawiki, etc.. The single user login doesn't work/ doesn't recognize me. I have to log in manually.
  1. The single user login with Wikipedia and Wikimedia Commons only works in a one-way direction. I first have to login to Wikipedia and if I then go to Wikimedia Commons, I get logged in automatically. But it doesn't work the other way around. If I log in to Wikimedia Commons first and then go to a Wikipedia website it doesn't recognize me.

Solution
Unfortunately I don't know how to fix both of these issues. But it would be great if the single user login worked in all Wikimedia projects and in all directions.

I tested these issues on multiple operating systems (Windows, Linux) and in multiple browsers (Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome) and with browser add-ons enabled/ disabled. Unfortunately nothing helps.

Event Timeline

Hello @Aklapper , sorry for my late response. Here are my answers!

I've copied the questions from https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:How_to_debug/Login_problems and answered them. Since this issue only affects Wikimedia's Mediawikis I've only answered the questions regarding those, not the questions regarding one's self-hosted Mediawikis.

1a) Does it persist after clearing cookies for the wiki domain?
Yes, the issue still persists after clearing cookies, cache and everything else stored in the browser.

1b) When logging in in incognito mode?
Yes, the issue still persists both in Mozilla Firefox's "normal" mode and incognito mode and also both in Google Chrome's "normal" mode and incognito mode.

1c) When logging in with a different kind of browser?
Yes, it still doesn't work; see 1b).

2)If you use any ad blockers or browser privacy add-ons, are they blocking anything? Does it work if you turn them off?
I don't use such plugins.

3)Does it affect all user accounts, or just one?
Just one account (the one with which I have opened this ticket).

4)Does the "remember me" flag make any difference? (Clear cookies before attempts.)
I've tried it but the "remember me" flag makes no difference.

5)If the problems are happening on a WikiMedia wiki, try logging in on another wiki, preferably one that does not share a second-level domain name (so if the problem happens on xy.wikipedia.org, try for example xy.wiktionary.org).
I've tried logging in to Mediawiki, Wiktionary, Wikidata and Wikivoyage. Unfortunately the issue is still like I described it in the first ticket.

If there is anything else I can do just let me know!
