In [[:de:Hilfe:TeX]] there is the recommendation to code German Umlauts in the <nowiki><math></nowiki>-environment as follows:
: <nowiki><math>\text{abcäöüÄÖÜßABC}</math></nowiki>
resulting in the extremely ugly
: <math>\text{abcäöüÄÖÜßABC}</math>, e.g. in MS edge see file F32253491
(even worse with IE11).
On the other hand, there exists e.g. the font "Computer Modern Unicode Serif Roman"
: cmunrm.pdf
which contains all the Umlauts and more in good shape. It should indeed be an easy task to give the <nowiki><math></nowiki>-environment access to this font e.g. when \mathrm{} or \text{} or \mbox{} has been coded.

Even as a German native speaker it is hard for me to tell what exactly is ugly here:
In order to make progress with this ticket more information is required. A screenshot of ugly vs nice would be helpful.
Can you also provide a screenshot of how it should like (maybe render a LaTeX document, optimally with LaTeX source)?
Guessing what is desired:
As my screenshot indicates it displays nicely with MathML rendering in Firefox. I guess https://github.com/mathjax/MathJax/issues/1425 is related. I am afraid the characters are just missing in the standard font currently used.
Please check http://docs.mathjax.org/en/v2.7-latest/font-support.html for further details. I hope the problem will vanish after the MathJax 3 update T262434.
I will decline the task for now, since it is not realistic that this will be resolved prior to the MathJax update.
OK, let's hope the problem will vanish after the MathJax 3 update.
Then the problem will have vanished.
Nothing better can happen.
