Description

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Australian_Christian_College_-_Singleton_Crest.png

On beta: https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/File:Burt_Self-portrait.png

This shows the contents of https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Australian_Christian_College_-_Crest.png. (note the word "Singleton" missing on Commons as the page was moved) or on beta https://commons.wikimedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/File:Emoji_u1f4a9.svg. The address bar however says "Singleton". On Beta, you see the contents of Emoji_u1f4a9.svg (poop emoji) while the address bar states Burt Self-portrait.

The "Add local description source" link goes to https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Australian_Christian_College_-_Crest.png&action=edit (without the "Singleton") or https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/w/index.php?title=File:Emoji_u1f4a9.svg&action=edit, a page which does not exist on enwiki.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Export/File:Australian_Christian_College_-_Singleton_Crest.png and https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Special:Export/File:Burt_Self-portrait.png prove the pages do exist on enwiki.

It can be edited by manually visiting https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=File:Australian_Christian_College_-_Singleton_Crest.png&action=edit and https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/w/index.php?title=File:Burt_Self-portrait.png&action=edit which doesn't seem to be linked anywhere.

File:Australian Christian College - Singleton Crest.png (with the Singleton) was listed on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Wikipedia_files_requiring_renaming as it included a rename request template.

Expected behavior: either the local description is shown, or the page redirects with a "Redirected from.." annotation below "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia".
What happen instead: crazy things

The hint about the redirect is missing (" (Redirected from ...)"), the real content of the page is seen on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Australian_Christian_College_-_Singleton_Crest.png?redirect=no

I would not expect anything with the file management here, possible duplicate of T16117

I suppose the problem is that https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Australian_Christian_College_-_Singleton_Crest.png?redirect=no also exists and overrides the local page on Wikipedia.

There is a way to exploit this, it's rather convoluted though so it's unlikely to happen.

  1. Someone uploads File:Burt_Self-portrait.png to enwiki (locally) and adds it to the article for Bert.
  2. Realizes the error in the filename and moves the file to File:Burt Self-portrait3.png but doesn't update the filename in the article.
  3. Realizes they didn't fix the spelling error at all but just added a "3" to the end, so move File:Burt_Self-portrait3.png to File:Bert Self-portrait.png, again without updating the filename in the article. So in the article it still says "File:Burt_Self-portrait.png". (admittedly at this point the image in the article will break)
  4. Vandal who is blocked on enwiki for good reason creates a redirect on Commons from c:File:Burt Self-portrait.png to c:File:Emoji u1f4a9.svg!
  5. Self-portrait on the article for Bert is replaced by poop emoji and File:Burt_Self-portrait.png shows the poop emoji as well. File:Burt_Self-portrait3.png is not affected.
