Develop learning toolkits and videos to demonstrate the use of essential tools for Wikipedia, Wikidata, and Commons
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Description

IMPORTANT: Make sure to read the Outreachy participant instructions and communication guidelines thoroughly before commenting on this task. This space is for project-specific questions, so avoid asking questions about getting started, setting up Gerrit, etc. When in doubt, ask your question on Zulip first!

Description

The Small wiki toolkits initiative is about developing technical capacity in smaller language wiki communities by running technical workshops, developing toolkits, and building a network of individuals interested in helping resolve the technical issues in the wiki communities. Learn more about the initiative. In the technical workshops run as part of the initiative, communities often request training on useful tools. And, we are starting to realize that running workshops on similar topics several times isn't a scalable solution!

There is a lot of information about the tools listed here:
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Tools
https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Tools
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits/Starter_kit/Bots_and_Tools#Tools

Still, we are missing the toolkits and videos to show how to use these tools. This project aims to create a toolkit per the recommendations listed here and also short videos (ideally not more than 10 minutes long) with subtitles that could be translated to demonstrate the use of the tools. Watch this video for some tips and tricks on making videos. As part of the project, you will be releasing these resources on Wikimedia Commons under CC-BY-SA 4.0 license and document them on the Small wiki toolkits/Starter Kit page.

Prerequisites

Developing presentations, video tutorials, documentation, ability to explain technical concepts clearly. Familiarity with wiki editing and necessary tools to create presentations and videos.

Microtasks

Pick a tool from the list of the tools shared in the resources above. Develop a short 5-minute demo video on what the tool is about, and how it can be used. When done, upload the material in Google Drive and share a link in a comment on this Phabricator task.

hello @srishakatux and @srodlund I would really like to hear your feedback on this. Thanks

I've followed the directions from the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PyGJiUIMGpw ( in the task description) and used tools they recommended here https://meta.m.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits/Starter_kit/Bots_and_Tools#Tools.

I made a video tutorial on "pageviews Analysis Tool" because it allows page owners or viewers to know how much reaction there page is getting on a daily basics and monthly basics.

Hi @Victoria_26 Thanks for sharing your tutorial and thanks for sharing about how you made the video! The Pageviews Analysis Tool can be very useful for folks working on Wikis.

Something that might improve the tutorial overall is a short explanation of why the tool is useful -- what can people use it for? You might propose a question at the beginning that the tool can help you solve and use this during the tutorial to explore the tool.

I observed that a lot of the tutorial was the narrator reading the same text that was on the screen or tool's UI. Since users will be able to explore the tool on their own, you probably don't need to read every option; try to focus on how the features can help users answer their questions and solve problems.

@Rakielle Thank you for this video!!! I thought it was well-paced and thorough without being too long.

Can you share a little more about how you produced it? What tools did you use?

@Victoria_26 Thanks for the changes you made to the video! I think you made some good edits to the video! It is much more concise and moves a lot faster without being overwhelming!

Can you share a little more about how you produced it? What tools did you use?

@srodlund
Thanks for your prompt feedback.

First, I sourced for the necessary images on WikiLoves toolforge page. Next, i used the VSDC video editor software to record my screen while using the WikiLoves tool.
And I added text to the images using the Pixel Lab application. Then i proceeded to edit the video, merge in the voice over and the subtitle using the Inshot Application.

Do I need to adjust anything in the video?
And how should I record my contribution to this project on outreachy?

I'll be anticipating your response.
Thanks in advance.

Hi, @Zend2020 Thank you for your contribution and for sharing the doc that provides some context about the video! I like that this is short and concise. I did notice at the very end, the sound is a little difficult to hear.

In the future, you may want to consider adding captions to help with accessibility.

Hi.. A question for the mentors @srishakatux and @srodlund.

So I had started working on a tool, but thanks to a busy schedule I have not yet uploaded the video. I have however seen a colleague has already uploaded a video on the same tool. Now do I have to choose another tool? Or can I still work on the same tool?

Hello @srishakatux , what you are referring to here is it the contribution recording and final application
Or is there any other one?

Also, please the proposal I am seeing in application process steps, is it part of the final application or are we to write and submit it here.

I checked the application and we were required to create a timeline of the work we plan to accomplish on the project and the tasks we will complete at each step .I was seeking for more guidance on that task. Thanks in advance.

I would be happy if our mentors @srishakatux and @srodlund can criticise it and correct me in areas needed.
I made use of the same tools used in creating the previous video on citationhunt.

Also I got the content translation tool from Special:ContentTranslation going through my Wikipedia account
I decided to go for the tool because I saw it's importance in communicating things without having the problem of language barriers.

I have read proposal examples from my senior colleagues.

What is final application and how can we write it??

What is final application and how can we write it??

To write your final application go to the Outreachy site where you picked this Wikipedia project under project list.
You will see where its written under this particular project "record contribution and submit final application " clink on it I believe you will know how to go on from there.

@Dagggg12 and others,

@GatwiriV and Miracleonyi25 In terms of the timeline -- It's best to think about the skills you would like to build during the program and what tangible things you would like to deliver at the end of the project and work back from there. Try to estimate how much time you think you will need to work on small parts of the project to complete it as a whole. When this round's applicant is accepted, we'll work together to refine their proposed timeline. Hope this helps!

@srodlund

Thanks, @Dagggg12 for sharing your video! I liked that it was short and simple and highlighted a useful tool!

Some things you may want to consider: 1) Before you started narrating, I could see your desktop and the files on it. This is something you may not want your audience to see--especially if you have anything identifying or private there 2) You only used half of the screen for the tutorial. It would be nice to see full screen 3) You referred to the audience as "guys" a few times. In order to keep things inclusive, we generally try to avoid using this term to refer to groups of people.

For the future, you might also consider using subtitles to make the video more accessible.

@Miracleonyi25 I'm not sure I understand the deadline question you asked, but hopefully, I can clarify. This microtask is associated with the Outreachy program, and the Outreachy application deadline for this round is November 5, 2021.

Google Summer of Code is a separate program and process that I don't have information about.

Let me know if that helps.

This helped so well @srishakatux

But I still want to know, since the application says December to March interns should not apply for the summer code camp, does that mean there will be no need to write the proposal that was to be shared here on phabricator.

I don't know if I communicated this well

I recorded another video on how to use the content translation tool.

@Miracleonyi25 For your video, I thought you did a great job! I would suggest considering subtitles to help improve accessibility.

Can you say a little more about the tools you used for this?

@Miracleonyi25 I think the best place to ask questions about the difference between the two programs and applications would be in the Zulip channel if you are not in there already: https://wikimedia.zulipchat.com/#narrow/stream/274201-gsoc21-outreachy22

For your video, I thought you did a great job! I would suggest considering subtitles to help improve accessibility.

Will do just that. Thanks so much

@Miracleonyi25 I just took another look in that Zulip channel and it might not be the right place to ask this question.

I reread the Outreachy information, and it says " If this application is for the December to March internship period, or you are not applying to Google Summer of Code, please leave this question blank." So as I understand, you would still follows the steps to submit the Outreachy application as normal, you just would not include the question about Google Summer of Code.

Thanks so much @srodlund and @srishakatux

Sorry I am asking too many questions

So, back to the proposal that should have been submitted here which I believe is related to the summer code, there would be no need again ?

@Miracleonyi25 You are not asking too many questions! :-) The process can be complicated, especially if it is your first time applying!!! And I'm happy to help as best I can.

Basically, what you want to do is just follow the steps for applying to Outreachy and just ignore the question about Google Summer of Code (GSOC) completely since it is not applicable for this round.

These steps should guide you along: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreachy/Participants#Application_process_steps

Note that step 12 says "Make sure that you complete the application form available on the Outreachy's program site (you do not need to create a proposal on Phabricator for this round). Answer any specific questions related to academic commitments and eligibility. Note that Wikimedia doesn't have any community-specific questions."

Let me know if this helps.

It says:-

"Please work with your mentor to provide a timeline of the work you plan to accomplish on the project and what tasks you will finish at each step."

What should we fill in these boxes??

@srishakatux and @srodlund

Please I just want to know since it says the timeline should be developed with our mentors assisting us.

Hi,

My name is Tirus Wainaina from Kenya. I have created a short demo video on "Pageviews Analysis suite".
Here is the link to the video: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1B_tFoy4VGVVUkZ64Yim9iNWaW_LjSYMq/view?usp=sharing . Please @srishakatux and @srodlund, I would love to know your feedback.

How I created the demo:

  1. I chose the tool from the list of important tools in this page: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits/Starter_kit/Bots_and_Tools#Tools and accessed the toolsuite using the link: https://pageviews.toolforge.org/
  1. After learning about the tool, I created the introduction using Microsoft Powerpoint and screen recorded the tutorial using "Bandicam" software.
  1. I joined the video, edited and added subtitles using "Wondershare Filmora X" software.

@Dagggg12 and @Miracleonyi25 I answered the question about the timeline earlier in this thread already.

"Please work with your mentor to provide a timeline of the work you plan to accomplish on the project and what tasks you will finish at each step."

"It's best to think about the skills you would like to build during the program and what tangible things you would like to deliver at the end of the project and work back from there. Try to estimate how much time you think you will need to work on small parts of the project to complete it as a whole. When this round's applicant is accepted, we'll work together to refine their proposed timeline. Hope this helps!"

"Please check with your mentor and community coordinator to see if you need to provide any additional information after you save your final application."

We are not requiring any additional information at this time.

Thanks for sharing this video! I thought that it was very clear and thorough and had a good pace and structure. I did notice that some of the graphics were squished (particularly towards the end of the video), though it may have been hard to get them on the screen. Have you considered adding subtitles for better accessibility? It may be more complicated because you have text at the bottom of some of the slides already -- so it's something to think about for future tutorials.

Can you tell us a little about the tools you used for this?

Thanks, @Tirus.W for sharing your video with us! I really liked this tutorial. It was thorough and well-paced! I really felt like you gave a full tour of this feature in a short time. Nice work.

One small thing to think about for the future is to try not to read word for word from the slides but give some variation when you are narrating -- a little variation can keep folks more engaged. I noticed this is just for the first few slides of your video that don't have subtitles, so having text there is good.

Please use the link below to access a 4-minute tutorial I created for one of the Wikimedia tools (PageViews Analysis):

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1wUzViGEM1OQhiIJHwTBX_RQfJh7dYOkl/view?usp=sharing

Simple Screen Recorder was used to capture screen recording of the process. It's freely available and easy to use and records high-quality images. Then I used VoiceOver and Recorder, which is a free app from Microsoft Store, to overlay the audio walkthrough. The process is quite simple which I found out after a couple of searches on the internet.

To enrich the video, I created an intro and outro using Canva. This is an app I have used in the past for videos I uploaded to my YouTube channel (book reviews). It lets the user create graphics and merge them with videos and it's easy to use.

Finally, I used an Android app, YouCut - Video Editor, to merge all the three components of the video together. I'm sure there are desktop applications for this (and other apps for the earlier tasks) but considering the time constraint, the phone app lets me quickly stitch parts of my video together. I was also able to use it to manually add video subtitles. Another good feature of the app is that it lets you output the video at any resolution (up to 4K) and also adjust the quality. This might come in handy in situations with limited connectivity.

Hi @Ekefre! Thank you for sharing your video tutorial! It was an interesting take on the pageview analysis tool. Wikimedia is a nonprofit company, so I don't typically think of the tools as supporting business cases. For the tutorials we create for the Outreachy round, we'll be thinking about how the tools can support the efforts of folks working on Wikimedia projects, so you may want to consider this audience if you make changes to the tutorial.

In your video, the idea of a "digital product" was unspecific, and so I didn't feel like there was a connection between that and the tool itself. Whether it is a business case or to support contributors who are working on the projects, I would still want to know why the tool will be useful to the work. How do the numbers in the pageview tool support people in the work they do? What might they do with the insights?

Hope this helps!

Hi Srodlund,

Thank you for your email. I will incorporate the points you have
highlighted and modify the video.

Regards,
Victoria Ekefre.

Hello everyone,
My sincere apologies for my late submission.
I have made a video on Pageview analysis.
I followed the suggested video and prepared a script.
I used "loom" for video recording.
I initially I used "Wondershare Filmora" for editing. But I found the interface the interface a little tough but mostly I was disappointed with the watermark. I spent about 2 days.
Finally I chose "OpenShot" a free and open source for editing.
I chose "veed.io" for subtitles.

Kindly review my submission so I can send it as a contribution.
Awaiting your reply earnestly. Thank you.

Hello Mentor

I have improved the video and tried to stretch some of the squished graphics. I have added some subtitles but I have struggled to find open source software which allows me to add subtitles without the addition of a watermarker. Any other suggestions are welcome.

@Ekefre You did a really great job integrating the feedback! The tutorial is much more suited for an audience of Wikimedia contributors, and I understand not only how to use the tool but why I would want to use it. Nice work!

@siyabonga_ngele Nice work integrating the suggested changes to this! I think these were good improvements to an already well-made tutorial. I see what you mean about the watermark, though. We can look more into open source solutions for this, but don't feel you need to revise the video again to try to remove it at this point.

Hi @Victoria_26 Thank you for submitting this! The citation hunt tool is a really useful tool for editors, and they would benefit from a tutorial helping them understand how to use it. Nice work! The video is well-paced and helped me how to understand the tool and why I would use it. I like the subtitles -- they are clear/high contrast and easy to read.

@Suha_098 Thank you for submitting the video! The content was good, but it was really difficult to hear. There seems to be some issue with the sound quality. You may want to check it, and share again.

Also, I'd encourage you to share the other video you have, even without subtitles. There are many aspects to creating a video, and subtitles are only one aspect. We'd love to see your work, even without these. So don't hesitate to share what you have.

I'm aware that the audio is a bit low but unfortunately there is a very big and auspicious festival currently going on in my country called Diwali. Due to which people burst crackers so that's the reason there is more disturbance.
I tried to reduce the background noise. If you know of any way I could reduce it any further pls do suggest me.
I will be very thankful.
I will certainly share the other video.
Thanks for your support and encouragement

@Suha_098 Thank you for the info! We know that there can be a lot of different factors that contributions--including background noise (and it's definitely hard to get good sound when there are firecrackers going off in the background!).

We're taking all of this into consideration for folks as we review the videos and applications, so please continue to just do your best. :-)

Hi Everyone ~ Just a general announcement that the deadline for the Outreachy applications has been moved to November 6! So you all have an extra day to work on and submit your applications.

Note that this deadline does fall on a weekend, so you may not receive answers to last-minute questions from mentors here on Phabricator. For general Outreachy questions, you can ask on the Zulip stream: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreach_programs/Zulip

Thanks, everyone, in advance, for sharing your videos and working on the microtask. It's been wonderful to watch everyone's submissions over the course of the contribution period.

Just a confirmation, so along as one has shared their link to this video on this phabricator forum/chat you can proceed to submit your final application via outreachy?

@Tirus.W Hello! Yes, share here the link to video, process, tools used, and submit the contribution and the final application on Outreachy website.

Hello everyone

So after the contribution stage I decided to make some research on apps that can help me add subtitle to videos automatically and I finally got one called
Kaptioned: I think the app is worth trying out, below is the link to the subtitle I used it to add to one of the video I created during the contribution stage

There are some misspelt words, which can be edited and replaced before saving.

I just shared the tool and this example because I felt it's worth seeing by many .

Hi everyone,

Please find video tutorials and toolkits to the PAWS, Quarry, WDQS, Content Translations tools below:

PAWS Demo

Quarry Demo

WDQS Demo

Content Translation Tool Demo

Please find the thoughts on the further small languages wiki project development for the next round of inters:

As the Outreachy participant in Round 23 with Wikimedia Foundation, I am working on a project to develop demo videos and toolkits to demonstrate the use of essential tools for smaller wiki communities: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T292135 .

This project is part of the larger Small wiki toolkits project to build technical capacity in smaller language wiki communities. More about the initiative: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits.

Here are my thoughts on the further project development for the next round of Outreachy interns:

We ran a survey to see which tools the community finds most helpful that might benefit from video documentation.
Some results of the survey showed that the community appreciates the interactive maps and graphs, which helps display complex information in articles; Hotcat gadget, Wikidata Game version 1, PAWS - exploratory data analysis, direct access to Dumps, prototyping, sharing code with others; suggestions to writing tutorials and research documents that contain a mix of text, code, images and mathematical formulas.
Quarry - exploring wiki databases using SQL queries, looking at public queries to see what others have searched for and how they have constructed their queries.

What I think is missing is the development of more advanced versions of tutorials on PAWS, Wikidata Tools, Wikitech, in the structure of a short course.

Also, perhaps a video tutorial introducing the Wikimedia Foundation ecosystem, how it works, for beginners, explaining:
Open Source culture;
Introduction to Wikidata, Meta Wiki, Media Wiki, Wikipedia editing;
Basic tools like Phabricator, Zulip, the documentation style.

A Phabricator task will be created for the next round of interns.

Welldone Alexandra I put down my suggestions in the google doc
