Some Core Platform clusters have inconsistent AAAA DNS records for the primary IPv6 of the hosts
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

Some clusters managed by the Platform team have inconsistent AAAA DNS records for the primary IPv6 of the hosts. Some hosts have the AAAA record in the DNS for their primary IPv6 address, some don't.
See https://wikitech.wikimedia.org/wiki/DNS/Netbox#Mixed_clusters for more details about the possible risks of the current setup and the two alternative actions to move forward.

This is the list of the affected clusters and related hosts as of 04/07/2022:

  • dumpsdata*:
    • have the AAAA record: dumpsdata[1004-1007]
    • lack the AAAA record: dumpsdata[1001-1003]
  • restbase*:
    • have the AAAA record: restbase[1031-1033,2024-2027],restbase-dev[2001-2003]
    • lack the AAAA record: restbase[1016-1030,2012-2023],restbase-dev[1004-1006]
  • snapshot*:
    • have the AAAA record: snapshot[1011-1015]
    • lack the AAAA record: snapshot[1008-1010]
  • thumbor*:
    • have the AAAA record: thumbor[1005-1006,2005-2006]
    • lack the AAAA record: thumbor[1001-1002,2003-2004]

@hnowlan @ArielGlenn Would you review?

The dumpsdata and snapshot issues are already known and listed in T271142 which Hannah and I watch.

@ArielGlenn the original linked task was referring to all hosts not having the AAAA DNS record for their primary IPv6. This one is instead focused only on clusters that have a mixed setting, with some host with and some hosts without the AAAA record.
This because it might be causing issues or actually be ready and easy to convert to full IPv6 support. See the link in the description for more details.
