Onboarding tutorial for Section Translation: Background & initial explorations.
Open, Needs TriagePublic

Description

This is part of the workflow process for the Section Translation onboarding tutorial [T313673].

Background

Section Translation currently provides a two-screen tutorial (first time only) before users start translating the section they have chosen.

This tutorial is intended to communicate the two main concepts of the tool:

  • The translation is done section by section.
  • An initial translation (machine translated) is suggested so that users can edit it and fix any mistakes.

Recent research has shown that this tutorial was found to be a very general set of instructions, which did not provide practical information on how to get started with the tool. It was decided to design a new onboarding approach that will replace these screens.

Initial questions

Some initial questions were raised in order to set the context and purposes of this work.

What do users want?

  1. … to be faced with a tutorial or an introduction that can provide understandable instructions on how to use the tool.
  2. … the tutorial to give further instructions on the process and the functionalities of the tool.
  3. … “something clickable” (sic.) - tell which button serves what purpose in the interface.

What can we do?

Potential solutions to the problem were defined.

  1. Interactive onboarding: Guide the users through the features step by step.
  2. Learning by doing

In addition to these two points, another proposed idea was to congratulate the user for having learned about the tool and encourage them to translate many and more sections, to keep motivation.

The goal was to deliver a more intuitive, interactive, and helpful onboarding process in order to facilitate guidance on the different functionalities and their uses.
