Caret (text cursor) isn't aligned to the word "Description" which is pre-filled in text box when starting a new talk section (using VisualEdit on Desktop view (iOS))
Open, Needs TriagePublicBUG REPORT

Description

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • Browse any wiki with a phone with iOS
  • Chose desktop view
  • Go to any talk page
  • Start a new section (with DiscussionTools enabled)
  • Choose "Visual" mode

What happens?:

The bottom of the caret is higher up than the bottom of the word "Description" which is pre-filled in the textbox where the content of the new section is entered. They are not aligned if you will. If you press on "source" the word is still there, albeit in maybe another font and size, and here the caret and the word "Description" are indeed aligned.

What should have happened instead?:

The caret and the word "Description" should be aligned in visual mode as well.

Software version (skip for WMF-hosted wikis like Wikipedia):

I identified this on my iPhone with iOS. Reproducible on both Safari and Chrome apps. Not reproducible on Windows PC.

This is because the placeholder text suffers from iOS Safari's automatic text size adjustment. We should disable it (https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/CSS/text-size-adjust), since it seems to be disabled for the actual input text (as seen in the second screenshot).
