@VirginiaPoundstone It's not possible to merge multiple Phabricator accounts, The options are delete or disable so they can't be used.

@VirginiaPoundstone The account you used here (has activity, so can not be deleted) [Linked to WMF sul account VirginiaPoundstone]
@Vpoundstone-WMF does not exist

There isn't a 1:1 link with WMF SUL (aka MediaWiki accounts), so a phabricator account can be linked to any SUL account.

For context, there are three different account types involved in the next lines:

• SUL accounts (on-wiki)
• LDAP accounts (also called "Developer account", used to access https://wikitech.wikimedia.org and https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/ and some other services)
• Phabricator accounts (which are either linked to a SUL account, or an LDAP account, or both. In addition to having some email address).

It looks like there are two Phab accounts: https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/p/VirginiaPoundstone/ and https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/p/Vpoundstone/ . Each account is linked to an on-wiki (non-WMF) SUL account (that's MediaWiki User on the Phab profile page) and is not linked to any LDAP account.

• The Phabricator account https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/p/VirginiaPoundstone/ uses a @wikimedia.org email address according to the database.
• The Phabricator account https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/p/Vpoundstone/ has another private email address.

Thus I assume the VirginiaPoundstone Phab account should be "the work account".

When it comes to wiki pages (not: SUL accounts), there are https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:VPoundstone_(WMF) and https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Vpoundstone . However, the former account does not exist according to https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralAuth?target=VPoundstone%20(WMF)
Your on-wiki SUL staff account seems to be https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralAuth?target=VPoundstone-WMF

I do not know / cannot query whether you already created an LDAP account.

I'd recommend to:

• Get the page https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:VPoundstone_(WMF) deleted. It is about a non-existing user account (I'd have permissions to delete the page.)
• Create a user page at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:VPoundstone-WMF by adding relevant content from https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Vpoundstone and consider using https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Template:User_info which comes handy.
• Edit https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:VPoundstone (if that was the account to keep existing) to clarify this is an account in individual capacity. You could always add a sentence like "My staff account is [[User:VPoundstone-WMF]]. Note that until 2022-XX-XX I used this account, User:VPoundstone, for both personal and staff edits." or such, if applicable.
• In Phab, go to VirginiaPoundstone's https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/people/editprofile/33998/ and set "Also Known As" to something like "Virginia Poundstone (WMF)" or such for https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/p/VirginiaPoundstone/
• In Phab, go to Vpoundstone's https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/people/editprofile/21245/ and set "Also Known As" to something mentioning "Personal account" or such. Alternatively, request disabling that account to avoid confusion if you don't plan any activity in Phab in personal/non-WMF capacity. (I'd have permissions to disable Phab accounts; disabling can easily be reverted.)
• Link your work-related Phabricator account to your WMF SUL account:
  • Create an LDAP account using your @wikimedia.org email address, if you do not already have such an account. (This is because we'll detach your existing non-WMF SUL account from the work Phab account but a Phab account always needs to be attached to an existing account with which you are logged in.)
  • If not logged in already, log into Phabricator with your VirginiaPoundstone Phabricator account by selecting Log In or Register - MediaWiki on the Phabricator login screen
  • Connect https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/people/editprofile/33998/ to a Developer Account at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/external/ by selecting "Add External Account 🡒 LDAP 🡒 Link External Account"
  • Log out of Phabricator
  • Log into Phabricator with your VirginiaPoundstone Phabricator account by selecting Developer Log In - Wikitech Account (LDAP) on the Phabricator login screen and using the credentials of the LDAP/Developer access/wikitech account
  • Make sure you are logged in on https://www.mediawiki.org as the SUL user VPoundstone-WMF
  • Go to https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/external/ and remove the non-WMF SUL account https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralAuth?target=VirginiaPoundstone
  • On https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/external/ , select "Add External Account 🡒 MediaWiki 🡒 Link External Account" and add the WMF SUL account https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:CentralAuth?target=VPoundstone-WMF
  • Also see https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Phabricator/Help#Creating_your_account for canonical documentation.
• Ask WMF ITS to disable https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:VirginiaPoundstone (to keep only User:Vpoundstone on wikis for personal capacity / non-WMF actions).
• Make sure to check which account you use when being logged into a wiki or Phab to separate personal actions and work/WMF actions. :)

I also highly recommend to clarify your team's onboarding docs (and if they are accessible for non-team members I'd be personally curious to take a look at them).

The onboarding instructions were borrowed from multiple other teams and there was duplication, which might be part of how I got in this mess. Also, it seems like my ITS account was not set up for me on my first day or so which might have contributed.

Completed:

• I successfully linked my SUL account (VPoundstone-WMF) and my LDAP account (Virginia Poundstone) with my Phabricator account (VirginiaPoundstone)
• I asked WMF ITS to delete the https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/User:VPoundstone_(WMF) page and the

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:VirginiaPoundstone page

• I created a user page at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:VPoundstone-WMF (thank you for the tips, still struggling with getting an image onto commons, but that's for later.)
• I edited https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:VPoundstone reflecting the personal/staff edits.
• I set the AKAs in my Phabricator account

Remaining Task:

• Please disable Vpoundstone https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/people/editprofile/21245/. Virginia Poundstone (WMF) should also be disabled if it exists.
