Steps to replicate the issue

key in "category: asian museum" in the search bar and search
"Category South Asian art in Asian Art Museum of San Francisco" shows up, even though https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:South_Asian_art_in_Asian_Art_Museum_of_San_Francisco is "0 members (0 subcategories, 0 files) - 13:04, August 8, 2017"

What should have happened instead?:
Category redirects should not appear in MediaSearch results.

this should be made a toggle option, with a default of "excluding redirects".
usually it's not helpful to find cat redirects, but sometimes, for example, if i want to determine when a category naming pattern first emerge, it's useful to include redirects in results.

Essentially, these are not redirects, they are 'soft redirects' aka FAKE. The software can't know that.

@TheDJ i'm happy with your solution https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Template:Category_redirect&diff=prev&oldid=857486910 . now the example cat redirect appears around 600th in the results. no cat redirect in the first 500 results. thx a lot.
