Mouse Over does not show anything in mapframe
Closed, DeclinedPublicFeature

Description

Example: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grand_Central_Terminal#Grand_Central_North

There is a mapframe used with some symbols. On the desktop I expect to see some text, when the mouse is located over the symbol, but no text shows up.

Mouse Over works when you click on the map, there I see something like "45th Street entrance"

Just to demonstrate hover in full-screen mode,

This works in full-screen mode, and on the smaller thumbnails on non-Wikipedia wikis such as Wikivoyage. As far as we know, this has never been a feature of Wikipedia map thumbnails because they're simply an image with no markup that would produce tooltips.

Oh, I see. The team did indeed talk about this when the WMDE-GeoInfo-FocusArea started. The idea is to render an HTML image map that can be placed on top of the .png image or come up with something custom based on JavaScript. Unfortunately this would need an entirely new render pipeline written from the ground up.

  • This is not feasible with the available resources.
  • The usability of HTML image maps is not great. Most users won't even notice.
  • This results in a really poor cost-benefit ratio.
  • Maps (Kartographer) already solved this. It's called dynamic mode where the embedded mini-maps in the article are interactive, as seen on e.g. Wikivoyage. Unfortunately this can't be made available on Wikipedia wikis for performance and reliability reasons.

It's not impossible. patch-welcome. But I think there is no benefit in tracking this here as long as nobody plans to work on this. Sorry.
