Analysis of newcomer suggested edits topic selection
Open, MediumPublic

Description

User story & summary:

As the Campaigns team, I want to better understand newcomer use of Newcomer homepage topics, so that I can decide if this data can be used to surface relevant events to new editors.

Background & research:

This task is important because:

  • Campaign organizers want to surface events to editors interested in the topic of their campaign.
  • New editors will be more successful if they find ways to get more involved in the Wikimedia movement.
Analysis:
  • Data on current use: How many newcomers specify at least one topic of interest?
  • Data on current use by topic: What is the breakdown of number of accounts interested in each topic?
  • Data on use by new account holder, activated newcomer, and newer experienced editor?
  • Data on use on mobile vs. desktop (users on mobile are less likely to have topic set because they don’t have to select a topic to initiate the module, whereas desktop users do.)
  • Data on GLAM (topic intersection work)
Acceptance Criteria:

Follow up with Campaigns on definitions as needed (newcomer, experienced newcomer, etc.)
Provide analysis based on the above data needs.

Event Timeline

Additional analysis is not necessary at this time. More so we'd like to source already available data points relevant to the below...or available data points similar to the below.
Note: we have data on edits via Turnilo looking at edits that have an app-suggested-edits edit tag and newcomer-task edit tag.

Data on current use:

  • How many editors are initiating the module on a monthly basis, on avg?
  • How many editors are interacting with the module on a monthly basis, on avg?
  • How many newcomers or editors specify at least one topic of interest?
  • Available: In 2021, of those users that saw the Suggested Edits module, how many of them did so with topics set? ~50–65% of visits had topics set.

Data on current use by topic:

  • What is the breakdown of number of accounts interested in each topic?
  • Which topics are most utilized and which are least utilized?

Data on use by new account holder, activated newcomer, and newer experienced editor?

  • Roughly what percent of the users of the tool are newcomers vs experienced editors?

mobile vs. desktop

  • Available: users on mobile are less likely to have topic set because they don’t have to select a topic to initiate the module, whereas desktop users do.

Adding this to the Product Analytics kanban board. I'll pick this up and grab statistics on “How many newcomers/editors have at least one topic defined?” later this week.

My understanding is that Iflorez and @nettrom_WMF have met and discussed, so this might no longer be a top priority. Is that correct? Feel free to adjust if necessary.
