Minor clean up associated with this task
- There are a few individual pages under Category:Top level. These seem to be stray inclusions more than true top-level pages. Assuming the top-level category should only contain subcategories, try to recategorize these pages.
- "Keep me logged in" extended to one year – moved to Category:Authentication and login
- Compression – moved to Category:MediaWiki development
- Academic hub – move to Category:Research?
- Copyright – move to Category:MediaWiki development?
- Deleted Category:MediaWiki since it only contains two pages and is so broad that it would need to contain nearly everything.
Notes on how categories work with translated pages
When adding a category to a translated page, add {{#translation:}} inside the category tag. (For example: [[Category:Top level{{#translation:}}]]) The Translate extension then renders the category on each translated page as [[Category:Category name/languagecode]]. It seems like these language-code-suffixed categories still need to be created by an editor as a category page (and manually added to the Category:Top level/languagecode hierarchy) before they can be browsed in the category tree.
Example: This page https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Bug_management/Phabricator_etiquette is part of https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Category:MediaWiki. The page has translations and uses {{#translation:}} inside the category tag. However, https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Category:MediaWiki/fr and https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Category:MediaWiki/en do not exist.
I assume that red-linked categories like https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Category:MediaWiki/fr would appear in Special:WantedCategories, but Special:WantedCategories has so many pages in it (more than 5,000), is creating these categories something that we want to do or have intentionally not done? Could this be done with a bot?
