Need data insight on the Hindi Wikipedia and Wikisource Edit-a-thon
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Hi,

In the month of July 2023, Hindi User group in collaboration with WMF and Google ran a one-month edit-a-thon (https://hi.wikisource.org/wiki/विकिस्रोत:गुणवत्ता_संवर्द्धन_संपादनोत्सव/जुलाई_2023 ) on Hindi Wikipedia (followed by an edit-a-thon on Hindi Wikisource) which resulted in the creation of 910 articles. To have a better understanding of the campaign and formulate future strategies. It'll be essential for us to run an analysis to determine the impact. It would be great if a comparative study could be done between this campaign and Project Tiger 1.0 (2018) and 2.0 (2019) https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Growing_Local_Language_Content_on_Wikipedia_(Project_Tiger_2.0)/Report .

Event Timeline

Hi @PDas, thanks for taking the time to report this! I'm not sure if this would be a Research project (see https://research.wikimedia.org/contact.html for that), or Product-Analytics (but that's probably not a "product"? Do you have more info which research questions you'd like to get answered by a comparative study?

@Aklapper - Guess, the word comparative study was not right here :)

The request is for the analytics team to help find the data insights from the campaign. It'll be useful to understand a few details like:

  • Total number of accepted articles
  • Range of Topics/Categories covered
  • Number of articles created using the Content Translation Tool
  • Total number of bytes added
  • Number of views received on the articles created during the campaign
  • Not sure if we can reflect any quality indicators (like average word count, references used)

And any other data, trends that might be helpful.

Similarly We It'll be great to get the insights for the Wikisource campaign as well:

@PDas: Then I'd recommend that you add the project tag of the Analytics team, so they can get aware of this task. :)

mpopov added subscribers: OSefu-WMF, Rmaung, mpopov.

@Aklapper: Data Platform Engineering teams don't work on these types of tasks. Please do not tag them for data analysis & data request-type asks.

The Research & Decision Science group (which Research and Product Analytics are part of) is working on creating an Asana intake form similar to L3SC for non-team specific requests like this and avoid "but that's probably not a "product"?". That will be rolling out soon.

@PDas: In the meantime I'm going to flag this for @OSefu-WMF (manager on Movement Insights, also part of R&DS group) and we'll need to figure out which team has bandwidth to handle this request, possibly working together to distribute the questions across both teams.

What timeline are you working with?

To have a better understanding of the campaign and formulate future strategies.

When do you intend to formulate those future strategies?

@Rmaung: For mine & Omari's future reference is this the type of work that your future team could work on and support Partnerships on evaluating community growth efforts like this edit-a-thon?

@mpopov: Yes, we would be the first point of contact for evaluating CG work like this. :)

@PDas: Was this edit-a-thon managed with the Programs & Events dashboard? This type of campaign evaluation is quite a bit more work to set up after the event has wrapped if we aren't already using tracking tools.

@mpopov - There was no dashboard created by the organizers. However, they did share the foundation tool link. Not sure if this would be of any help. https://fountain.toolforge.org/editathons/sampadanotsavjune23.

Also, where can I get the support for setting up the Programs & Events dashboard? The Hindi UG is planning to run multiple edit-a-thons on Wikipedia and Wikisource throughout the year. It'll be great it multiple edit-a-thons can be linked to a single dashboard.

Hi @PDas I'm sorry – Product Analytics does not have the expertise nor the bandwidth to respond to this request.

Becky is currently starting an evaluations team within Community Growth and hiring right now, so it's going to be a while before they're able to take on requests like this.

The good news is that it looks like that edit-a-thon was tracked with Fountain tool so the link you shared already has measurement of impact you're asking for. P&E Dashboard (which Becky recommended) is a tracking tool like Fountain – they both basically do the same thing.

For future events I would recommend taking a look at https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Campaigns/Organizer_Framework and encourage them to set up their edit-a-thons with Event Registration tool, which can integrate with P&E dashboard.
