Synopsis

Project Description
Conceiving, writing, building and administering, and analyzing a survey that will help Wikimedia better understand those who edit and use translation to contribute across different language versions of Wikipedia.

Participating in all stages of research, from meeting with stakeholders to decide what questions to ask, all the way through data collection, analysis, and composition of a research report.

AIMS & GOAL
Better understand those who use translation and edit across multiple language versions of Wikipedia. Understand their motivations, goals, and challenges in a way that informs product development to support their efforts.

IMPACT
This project is expected to have direct implications for product teams (including but not limited to the Language and Growth Teams), helping them to better understand the experience of multilingual editors as well as identify product interventions to support their work.

OUTPUTS
Analysis and shareable report of the survey.Also,there is an opportunity to make space for direct sharing and discussion with relevant Wikimedia Foundation teams.

Timeline

The internship begins on December 4, 2023, and ends on March 1, 2024.

Provide a comprehensive report highlighting key findings, trends, and patterns in the motivations and challenges faced by those using translation across different language versions of Wikipedia.

Product Development Recommendations:Translate survey insights into actionable recommendations for product development, specifically targeting improvements that support the needs and goals of multilingual editors. Clearly outline interventions that can enhance the user experience within Wikimedia.

About Me

Passionate about leveraging technology for positive societal impact, I am Shriya Kamat Tarcar, a Computer Science Engineer from Goa,India. Notably,I got selected as one of the 15 fellows globally for the Data Science for Social Good Fellowship at the University of Warwick,UK where I collaborated with West Midlands Combined Authority and Pure Leapfrog to predict energy efficiencies, contributing to regional carbon neutrality goals in the West Midlands. I also worked as a Developer Intern at companies like Timble Law Associates and SAWO labs.

I love participating in hackathons,coding competitions and community program initiatives(I have been a Microsoft Learn Student Ambassador[Beta])Beyond the realms of technology, my enthusiasm extends to diverse interests, like acting on national television,being a radio jockey on All India Radio and 92.7 BIG FM,taking part in debate,fancy-dress,dance,drawing and sanskrit shloka competitions.I'm on a journey to make an impact both in and outside the tech sphere.
