Error accessing File:KlimtDieJungfrau.jpg after it was included on the enwiki Main Page
Closed, ResolvedPublicPRODUCTION ERROR

Description

Error

At midnight (UTC) earlier today (11 Jan 2024), the file https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:KlimtDieJungfrau.jpg was included on the enwiki Main Page as the Picture of the day. Shortly afterwards, it was reported onwiki that the image had stopped working/wasn't loading. I also confirmed this myself - the 400px thumbnail URL that my browser was attempting to load was not responding with a photo. (At first, Google Chrome was giving me a generic ERR_FILE_NOT_FOUND, although the server later started responding with a Wikimedia error screen instead.)

Due to the error, the Main Page picture was quickly swapped-out with a lower-resolution version; however, there is still an error when attempting to view the page for the picture on enwiki or commons (screenshot below).

Apologies if this is a duplicate report - I just thought better to report it in case there isn't already an open task relating to this sort of issue.

Impact

Before a lower-resolution version was swapped in, the error caused the picture of the day not to display to visitors to the Main Page. The featured-picture version of the image in question still seems to be (at least partially) inaccessible.

Notes

Probably also worth noting that the appearance of this error meant that the picture of the day has had to be swapped out with a version that isn't a Featured Picture.

Adding SRE as from what I've read it seems like it might be a relevant team here. Apologies if this is incorrect.

Currently the 429 errors are because there have been too many failures for this image, and that throttling is masking the real error source - however, a 200MB JPG is probably computationally expensive for thumbor to properly scale the image in a timely fashion (hence the lower-res version working properly). I'll see if I can confirm this

Did the image previously have valid thumbnails *before* it was moved to the front page?

@hnowlan I believe it did - I briefly saw a thumbnail myself at one point, and onwiki it was reported that "there were no issues when [the photo was put] in the original template" (ie. before it moved to the main page). Regarding the HTTP error code, at one point since filing this report I remember seeing a 500 (with the same Wikimedia error screen); however I'm afraid I didn't copy the full message. If it would be helpful, I can add the details here if I see a 500 again.

Apologies if this info is unnecessary/unhelpful, but I just received a 500 error attempting to load a thumbnail for this image, and thought I should copy it here in case it would be aid investigations (given the comment about the throttling masking the real error source).
