Old notifications are reappearing.
Closed, InvalidPublicBUG REPORT

Description

I've noticed a few times recently new notifications popping up which I was pretty sure I'd seen already. I just got another one and this time I've captured some data. I got this alert just now on commons (the bell icon turned red):

Schwede66 mentioned you on the talk page of user Krinkle in "KrinkleBot is skipping the English page", with a timestamp of "1mo":

That event did indeed happen 1 month ago. The page in question hasn't been edited since July 28th (1 day after the original alert).

My understanding of Vector skin was that new/unread notifications show a blue circle in the upper right corner while the screenshot here shows an empty circle in the upper right corner, so I'd like to understand better why you think they reappear? Were they not displayed for a while? It would help to use the bug report form (linked from the top of the task creation page) to create a bug report, and fill in all the sections in the template instead of deleting them, to avoid misunderstandings. Thanks.

I opened this bug to record my observations with as much information as I was able to supply. Perhaps it'll happen to me again and I'll be able to add more details. Perhaps somebody else will read the report and say, "Yeah, that pattern is familiar, I think it's happened to me too". Such is the nature of intermittent problems.

To answer your specific question, I think this reappeared because the notification bell lit up red and when I clicked on the bell, this was the most recent notification in the list, and it's a month old, and I remember seeing it before. As for the blue circle, by the time I had taken the screenshot, I had looked at the notification, so its state had already changed.

I skipped the form because I didn't really have much to say in direct response to the questions beyond what I described in prose form, but to preserve the harmonies:

Steps to replicate the issue (include links if applicable):

  • No clue. Just keep doing stuff and when you get a notification, look at it.

What happens?:
Sometimes it's a notification you've seen already

What should have happened instead?:
You shouldn't see it again.

Ah, thanks! Was that on the very same wiki?
If not, this might be T262927: Logging in to a WMF wiki shows some Notifications as "new" though I already saw them on other wikis about previously dismissed notifications and notices reappearing after going to a new project...

It's certainly possible I saw it the first time on enwiki and the second time (a month later) on commons, but I can't be sure of that.

Setting task status to stalled as this needs clearer reproduction steps. Please reset the status to open once provided. Thanks!

Thank you for reporting this. 🙏 .
I'm closing it for now, but if this is ever noticed again in a way that is distinct from T262927: Logging in to a WMF wiki shows some Notifications as "new" though I already saw them on other wikis, then please reopen this task!
