Enable new page restriction on Simple English Wikipedia
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Author: netoholic

Description:
On Simple:Wikipedia, please enable the
logged-out-user new page creation restriction.

Simple: is currently understaffed on administrators, but we have
been getting a lot of activity lately. The logged-out
restriction would help us greatly. We have a lot of red links,
and few quality articles... this creates a situation where we
get a lot of user tests and vandal-ish comments being left. Many
of these not-yet pages have been created and deleted several
times.

Do you really think the "logged-out-user new page
creation restriction" feature is a good idea for simple.
wikipedia? 'Simple' is relatively small, so I think you
would rather profit from edits of anonymous and fresh
users, don't you (over-all)?

While there are some good edits, we're not benefitting from new page creations. We are very much
a "dumping ground" for odd bits. Often, we get people dropping in and copying their favorite
article directly from their home wiki. We also get POV/etc. warriors that drop us their
preferred versions of en: articles. There is also a higher-than-I'd-think amount of strictly
nonsense pages being created -- we've been linked several times from high-traffic sites like
SomethingAwful, being described as a "dumbed-down Wikipedia". Our regular contributors are kept
extremely busy chasing new pages, and we are falling behind on quality in a major way. Being
that there are only two active admins at present, clearing a few dozen speedy deletions is pretty
typical. I promise, we'll put in the effort to get people to create accounts.

Erm, can't you just make more sysops? I mean, it's a medium sized community and
there SHOULD be a lot of admins. I don't think this is necessary, but if YOU,
the contribs from simple:, think that it'd be good, then who am I to judge?

I'm the active bureacrat on Simple, and I do wish we had more sysops. The problem is that the rate of
new (bad) article creation is totally unmatched compared to the article quality. Cutting out the
sporadic contributions frees up time for actually writing, and encouraging people to create accounts
will contribute to the sense of community.

I think this bug should be closed. There was no input from the community on this, and the majority of page creations are good ones (I am an active admin there, and Netoholic is a former bureaucrat who last edited in late 2006).
