I first get
"datasets.wikimedia.org uses an invalid security certificate. The certificate is only valid for stats.wikimedia.org (Error code: ssl_error_bad_cert_domain)" in Firefox 33 and then a 404.
Deprioritizing, as this did not break ... it never worked.
The corresponding RT ticket from 2014-08-05 is RT 8085.
It has also been reported on the analytics mailing list in 2014-09-30 at:

.
ottomata moved stat1001 behind misc-web.
Now SSL is handled before the request gets to stat1001, and the issue is gone.
