The current registration process requires a "Real Name" field be filled out. Given the norms of Wikimedia (and the desire of Legal) we don't want to force anyone to give a real name when they don't want to. The prefered move is probably to just make it an optional sign up part but I'm not sure exactly where it's used which could be why it's required. If it's required a sort of 'display name' perhaps we just need to rename the field to be that? That would encourage them to type something else "James" or "Jamesofur" for example rather then the feeling that it is supposed to be your real/legal name.
