To follow up on discussion with Monte yesterday:

• The existing spinner was a stopgap mostly related to difficulty in ascertaining actual prospective load time.
• We think it's technically feasible to develop a heuristic for a progress meter's advancement as data is buffered. It seems the prevailing pattern is to let the progress meter inch to the completion state, and then sort of pulse through to the end as the actual compositing begins.
