Option to mute page, user or talk page section
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

Feature req

An option to mute a talk page discussion sections (e.g., those marked by /* SECTION */ in the edit summary, which turn to a "→ SECTION NAME" in the watchlist). For example, I end up unfollowing policy pages because they'll have discussions that don't concern me. Instead of unfollowing the page and missing potential discussions that I did want to see, it would be nice to automatically ignore sections individually.

Alternatively, the mute could apply to the whole page (turn off notifs from that page altogether for a week/month) if I want to watch the page in the future (say, after the current activity dies down) but just not now. I would say muting discussions is the priority, though.

Probably a larger feature idea but it would make my time spent in the watchlist much more productive.

This is not the first time this has come up, but muting a section would be error-prone if I use the /* SECTION */ information (sub-sections, section renames etc).

For muting a page temporarily, I was thinking about implementing that. The easiest option would be to only hide the page in crosswatch, but it would then only work in the current browser, as all the config is stored on the client. I could also actually remove the page from the watchlist for some timeframe so that the page would not show up on the regular watchlist (and maybe make a gadget for it separate from crosswatch). But I'm a bit cautious doing that, as it would require me to store the information in a database and there are many things which could go wrong (Tools also isn't exactly the best place for this).

As a side note, I'm hoping that T100508: Watchlist expiry: Watch pages for a specified time frame (2013) gets implemented, it would be very helpful for users and maybe could be also expanded to provide an API to temporarily remove a page from the watchlist.

None of those options sound particularly bad to me, but this req probably has more to do with watchlist functionality (at least right now) than crosswatch, so noted

From the meta talk page:

On commons it would be helpful to filter sometimes certain users because they moved by hand 1000 files to another category but the watchlist just can show 1000 entries. So to see what other users were doing it'd be great to filter that one user out. Thx.--[[User:Sanandros|Sanandros]] ([[User talk:Sanandros|talk]]) 13:10, 14 August 2015 (UTC)

I think it would be best to have have an mute page and a mute user option for some timeframe which can be set individually. Possibly also mute section option.

That scenario might be solved by grouping changes by the same user/page together—could have sworn I saw a ticket for that somewhere... but, hey, I'd love to mute

Crosswatch seems unmaintained and inactive (see T269703). You may want to use https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:GlobalWatchlist instead.
