Help a new volunteer dev get his timeline script on Tool Labs
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

See this discussion on wiki.

This is a new dev who needs some help figuring out how the WMF deals with scripts. The script is described at http://www.simile-widgets.org/timeline/ It's been released under BSD three-clause. He'd like to use it on Wikipedia. Could someone please talk to him about this?

Tools wouldn't be able to handle the load if this were included on every wikipedia page (such an accidental DDOS has happened before). There are two basic options:

  • host it on-wiki
  • host it as a tool on tool labs, and make pages link to that tool

If it's possible to handle it on-wiki, that would probably be the best option, as community consensus is probably a bigger hurdle than the actual technical implementation.

Also, Extension:Graph is already very powerful, and if the sliding thing is missing from that, I'd rather prefer someone implementing that/offering their expertise in that extension than partitioning the efforts between "timeline" and "sliding timeline".

Leaving up for grabs as it's not clear that tools is the proper venue at all.

Closing as Declined: old ticket and possibly will never have any progress per coren above.
