More living room TV-focused app platforms are becoming available that are open enough that you don't have to make specific arrangements with the manufacturer to get your app on them:

• Android TV (various devices already out, based on Android)
• 'tvOS' Apple TV (coming Octoberish 2015, based on iOS)
• Xbox One new interface update (coming October-Novemberish...? based on Windows 10)

It would not be a technical stretch to adapt our mobile apps to work on the TV-based systems. Additionally, many mobile devices support connecting to a TV via an HDMI cable or WiFi-based protocols, and could make better use of the available screen real estate. (Think of presentations also.)

However the current searching & reading mobile UIs would probably not be great on a TV with no/limited touch interaction.
