Batch Task Editing not possible on touch devices (cannot select several tasks)
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

batch modification is not obvious on an executed search on desktop, and not possible to do from the mobile site.

It's at the end of Maniphest advanced search queries (saved or new).

In fact it is a lot more visible than it is in Bugzilla, and we are slightly concerned about giving this permission to any registered user (as it is now).

Perhaps there is a permissions issue? I'm not seeing this functionality on the query results page.

Can you share the URL of the query you are performing?

By the way, you can also get the batch edit button clicking the "View All" button in project pages, and also the "Assigned", "Authored", etc, links in the left at https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/maniphest/ -- the reason being that these are just search queries as well.

Batch edit is a specialized action, and I think it makes sense to have it at the end of a list of results of a Maniphest query, or at the end of the list of all the tasks in a project, all the tasks assigned to you, etc.

I bet the reason why it is not working in mobile is exactly the same reason why cards cannot be moved in wokboards. Long press on a card object doesn't select the task, triggers other (unintentional) events instead.

Personally I don't think there is going to be an interest in advertising more this powerful feature giving it a more predominant location. Do you want to refocus this task on the lack of batch edit in mobile?

My argument is that we keep it (and make it better) or get rid of it. I don't see the rationale for not having it also at the top of the list as well, especially if the query results in a lot of items.

In some systems the actual UI for bulk operations is only displayed when multiple items are selected, this might solve for your issue of exposing these controls to users who don't need them.

I assume the functionality is at the bottom because you would want to review your search results before applying an action on all of them. Personally I would not want to make it more obvious / expose it more as it's a powerful tool and I don't expect most users to need it that often.

Batch field modification is possible on some mobile devices as the responsive UI depends on screen resolution: The batch task editor is not displayed on my Nokia Lumia 800 but it is displayed on my Nokia N950. Criterion to display the batch task editor at the bottom of query results seems to be ≤524px vs ≥525px width.

@Aklapper, doesn't matter if the controls are visible, if there is no way to multi-select on a touch device… currently it requires you holding shift while selecting items, this isn't possible on most (any?) mobile platforms. Basically this can't be fixed unless they move to a checkbox style or tap on, tap off style selection for mobile.

I see, you refer to the "Shift-Click to Select Tasks". So the problem is rather that batch editing is not possible on touch devices. I'm going to adjust the task summary.

@Aklapper, also the interface isn't even shown on most mobile devices, so really its both issues.

I'd assume that they will show the Batch Edit button in mobile when you can actually batch edit on mobile. The fact that the button is not shown now is not a bug, but consistent design.

I'm declining this task.

Batch edits don't work in mobile, but they are not offered either. The root cause is the problems of touch interaction for the task objects, which is something already covered indirectly in other tasks.

Batch edits for desktop are available for acl*Batch-Editors only. They should know where the button is, and for the rest of users it is not really relevant.

If someone really wants to file a related task upstream, they can do it, and share the link here.

Qgil claimed this task.
