As you can see, VE deleted some references and added two little snowman (☃☃).

Any information from the user on what browser they were using, if they have any odd gadgets or browser plugins, or what they did that broke it?

Looks like all he actually does is just clicking on the word next to the ref, the ref disappears, the snowmen arrive. Doesn't happen when logged out, he says.

This has been "Unbreak Now" priority for three weeks without any news - how to proceed here?

You're right Andre - I've given all the details I had, I can't reproduce, and AFAICT this only happens for one user.
