The Book Sources feature, for finding books by ISBN numbers, needs to list the title and author of the book to allow people to confirm that the ISBN is actually correct, and as a reassurance that they clicked the correct link.

You're saying that there is a data source that lists a book's presence in thousands of booksellers and libraries but doesn't list the book's title?

I haven't said anything in this direction, but: yes. Currently, MediaWiki itself doesn't query any database for any information about an ISBN (as far as I can tell). Could you provide a link where you've these information? (Link to a WMF wiki project?).

Ok :) Like I'm said, currently, Special:BookSources provides links to several book databases, but doesn't query any of them. It probably would be possible to do that for some databases, but there are some questions before that:
- Does any database provide an API to access the data (and if yes, what data exactly?)
- How is the data licensed?
- Where does the data came from (who provided it and who makes sure, that it isn't false in most cases)?
After these questions are clarified, it would (from my point of view) possible to implement this :)
