Set celebration logo on Czech Wikipedia
Closed, ResolvedPublic

Czech Wikipedia reached a 350 000 milestone and we uploaded celebrative logo (logo). It was three hours ago and there is still nothing changed. Is there any new logo change procedure (e.g. because of HiDPI retina variants or because of DPI variants 1.5x and 2x)? Or should we wait for more time?

Dereckson lowered the priority of this task from Unbreak Now! to High.EditedApr 2 2016, 12:11 PM

Logos are now served through the MediaWiki configuration. I can change it in the configuration if you wish. Please provide the 3 versions of the celebration logo, or a SVG version.

2x size is 270x310, 1.5x size is 204x234.

I decrease the priority as cs.wikipedia is still working, unbreak now is for incidents forbidding normal use of a wiki.

Generally, wikis set their celebration logos through CSS. If you choose so, you can edit MediaWiki:Common.css and add something like this:

#p-logo a {
    background-image: url( !important;

You can also use the .mw-wiki-logo class as CSS selector instead.

This method will allow you more flexibility as you can control when to switch back to regular logo.

@Dereckson Thank you, we'll discuss these possibilities and decide for one of suggested solutions.

So we discussed the issue a little bit on IRC, please note the configuration way is the cleanest for users, the most optimized, as we only have to serve one logo, not two.

I'm then willing to prepare you the change and deploy it immediately.

Dereckson renamed this task from Czech Wikipedia logo can not be changed to Set celebration logo on Czech Wikipedia.Apr 2 2016, 12:31 PM

@Dereckson English Wikipedia used Common.css file to change celebrative logo, therefore on czech Wikipedia we decided the same way for now. It could be changed by configuration later, but at the moment there isn't any 1.5x and 2x variants of celebrative logos yet, so this would be easier solution.

@Urbanecm If you prepare a 270x310 version and upload it here or on Commons, I can do the resize for 1.5x as the same time as the optimisation.

@Dereckson I'm not the author of the logo. This logo was created (with modifying old version) by Bazi@cswiki. I uploaded the logo to Soubor:Wiki.png only.

Or if I was not mentoined because you thought that I am the author, why did you mentoin me in your comment?

Yes I've seen your name in the uploader field and thought you were the author.

I'll ask the author for this version.

Okay, I've understood the issue: you don't have access to the source, and these logos have been all prepared in 2011.

Let's try another approach.

@Dereckson That is :) What does the change mean? You disabled the logo? If that's true I think that you can close this task and I'll try to prepare SVG version until next milestone. Thank you.

Tasks done

@Urbanecm The merge was the celebration logo put it our configuration repository.

Then, I deployed the change so is updated, according our new configuration.

Now, you can remove the CSS hack, and enjoy your logo directly served from the server.

Revert planification

Could you also give us an indication of when we should revert back to the traditional logo?

Future logo

I've found this tutorial to give with Inkscape a metallic effect to a text, if you wish to keep this gold font.

Removed. I'll write other things tomorrow. Thank you.

@Dereckson What do you mean by indication? Should I create new ticket when we'll want to revert this change? Or do you want date when we want to do it?

Thanks for the tutorial, I'll read it.

@Dereckson By the way, why is this ticket in Working on board. I think that it should be in Done (because the logo is set).

Yes, it would be convenient to already know the date.

Project board

This project board is mainly used to sort the open tasks Herald rules to move column from one column to another doesn't exist yet to help to automate the process.

You can click on the working on go to the board, replace "Open tasks", by "all tasks" and move the task card to the done column.

I think (there is no consensus on it) that we can revert it at 17th April 2016. Is it ok?

Project board

I moved it.

Okay, I'll add it in our deployment calendar. Thanks for the move.

This is listed for April 18th on the deploy calendar, but the whole week of April 18th we will not be doing any normal deploys due to the datacenter switchover (switching master datacenters).

Want to do it the Thursday before or the week after?
