Cannot copy and paste popup text
Closed, DeclinedPublic

Description

When I hover over a link a hovercard shows with a useful definition.
As a user who is trying to learn about a topic I might want to copy this summary to a clipboard, but right now I cannot do this (I can only click the hovercard itself to navigate to the page). Should this be possible? It always saddens me when I cannot copy and paste text in apps and there's no reason this shouldn't be possible in a web experience.

@Jdlrobson i think you meant the new hovercards/popups, not the old en.wp ones right...?

Yup. Thanks! (And it's still a problem.. :/)

I found myself in similar situation where i couldn't copy the text.

keeping the entire hovercard clickable is a good way to ensure "clickthrough" but it comes at this cost.

the other option is to have dedicated link to go to article

Pros

  • specific action might improve conversion of hovercard -> articles
  • you can copy text if you want

Cons

  • smaller target area to go to article, so it might also decrease conversion of hovercard -> article

I will defer to @ovasileva if we want to pursue this direction, as a test maybe?
not sure how feasible it is to take this under the first release of hovercards, but i feel like we should take this decision before shipping hovercards because it's a major change in how people interact with hovercards. if we ship with Option A and then switch to Option B, it's going to be a bad experience.

I think the cons on this overwhelm the pros for the time being

From my side, I think this will go under our enhancements bucket for after release. It would be a neat feature, but it's a big change in functionality. Priority is set as normal for now, so we don't lose this in the "low" bucket, but timeline-wise it would be fairly far into the future

I'm declining and recording this decision so we don't lose it:

We can revisit it later. There's no point in having a card we cannot act on in the current time.
